Inverness Citadel 3, Ross County 1

Ross County were dismissed from the Qualifying Cup competition in their first-round tie against Citadel in Inverness last Thursday. Despite the fact that the County are new to senior football, they were favored to "put it across" the Citadel, even though the latter had the advantage of playing at home. However, Citadel rose to the occasion, and if their three-to-one victory was somewhat flattering, they deserved it, if for nothing else than that they capitalized on the few opportunities that were presented to them. The County started off well, but when pressed, their defence was none too sure with a heavy ball and a greasy pitch. Citadel's first goal came from a corner, the ball being headed into the net by the inside right, with Gray having no chance to stop it. Citadel were dangerous in the forward line, especially Logie at outside right, whose play was delightful. Time and again the County raised their supporters’ hopes of equalizing, but Citadel's dour defence and too much individual play on their own forwards’ part nullified some good opportunities. Gray had again to admit defeat, a breakaway by Citadel being crowned with success. The second half opened with Pirie at centre forward and Macrae at centre half. This formation looked like getting the desired goals, but Citadel were the first to find the net. The County did not lie down, however, and when Pirie netted the long-overdue goal, they livened up even more, but their efforts were of no avail, the game ending three goals to one in Citadel's favour.
The County team as a whole were not up to their usual standard. Gray's play improved greatly, and he handled the ball in masterly fashion. With the first two goals he had no chance, but the third one he might have caught. All over, Gray gave a fine display, and on occasions put heart into a shaky defence. Johnstone and Munro were off their game, and too many fouls were given away by both. A fast forward line kept the County halves on the run most of the time, but they came out of a hard game with credit. It was in the forward line that the County lost; Macleman was not up to the outside right position and was inclined to play in the centre or defence. His place is on the half-back line, where he excels, and it is gratifying to note that tomorrow (Saturday) he resumes at his old position, right half. Macrae was not a success as inside right, but on his moving to centre half he showed good football and a thorough understanding of the position. Trail and Bowie were the best wing, but hard as Trail worked, he could not get the line moving. Dave Mackenzie, although not successful at centre forward, showed the right tactics and dash, if only he had shot more. He was a trier all the time, and what did not come off on Thursday might be a crowning success on another occasion. Mackenzie had no luck; the ball did not seem to run in his favour.
