| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Ross County 0 Peterhead 1 THIS was another game which Ross County should have won easily, but they failed to capitalize on the chances they were offered. Top-tier opposition was there for the taking, as it had been in recent home matches against Keith and Buckie Thistle, who had also struggled to victory by the odd goal. In the first half, County had the advantage of the strong west wind, which favored the team defending the Police Station goal, and for most of this period, keeper John Suttar was not called upon to produce any dramatic saves. All that was necessary was for him to pick up the ball or mop up after a Peterhead attack had broken down. On one occasion he punched away a dangerous corner kick, but for all intents and purposes, it was an easy first half for John, as his outfield colleagues were keeping pressure on the visitors’ goal area. The home defense seemed to have everything under control, pressing forward with the attack when necessary to great effect. However, it was the combination of Billy Ferries and Nero Macdonald that looked as though it could turn the day for County. When Ferries was not providing the speedy, controlled approach and the perfectly placed pass to Nero, the latter was reciprocating for the winger. Keeper Tait saved a strong shot from Macdonald, and shortly afterwards, when the striker drew him out of position, he must have heaved a sigh of relief as the ball sped across the front of the goal. On another occasion, Cammie Robertson sent Nero through, but with an open goal before him, he again shot the ball wide. First-half honours went to Ross County, who continued where they had left off in the second period. The elements, however, were favoring Peterhead. Keeper Tait blocked a header from Macdonald as he came out to challenge the striker on the six-yard line and brought off a daredevil save. A Ferries cross to the far post was headed clear with Scott Lemmon just waiting to pounce on the ball. As the game progressed, Peterhead grew in strength and ability, moving the ball about with more precision and finding their men much better with one-touch passes. The County goal underwent a veritable siege as corner kick after corner kick was dropped on the far post to be cleared by a County head. It seemed that at last the cross-ball syndrome had been overcome, but unfortunately, although the ball was cleared from the immediate area, it never went much beyond the 18-yard line, where it was whipped up by Peterhead and the pressure was on. Finally, in this spell, in the 65th minute, the visitors were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. The “wall” was lined up, and everything appeared shipshape, until Thomson curled the ball round the defenders, and it entered the net high up to Suttar’s left. In the closing period, County tried desperately for the equalizer, but it just would not come, the keeper making another daredevil save as Ferries broke through. The match provided much entertainment. Both teams were fairly evenly matched, and County certainly had their chances in both halves to take full points. |
