Ross County 0 Caledonian FC 2

On Wednesday evening, Caley showed they had no intentions of treating Ross County with anything other than respect, and right from the kick-off, they endeavoured to upset their opponents’ equilibrium by putting them under all sorts of pressure from the start. There was to be no Inverness Cup “embarrassment” for Caley! They were not to be taken to the cleaners this time!
In that opening period, Caley attacked constantly, and although they forced corner after corner, the County defence got the ball away every time, with keeper Suttar continuing his magnificent form.
Caley were playing with great confidence and at times appeared to toy with their opponents, whose tackling was sometimes a little off the mark, and not of the hard, tough variety they themselves had to take—very uncompromising, but, as far as the visitors were concerned, effective!
In the 18th minute, Caley took the lead when Docherty evaded a tackle by Lemmon and hared off down the right wing before crossing deep to the far post, where an unmarked Alan Duff simply ran in and headed a great goal.
Caley pressure was maintained, and Suttar was being called upon to make several spectacular saves. The dangerman was Docherty, who had a roving commission.
In the 36th minute, Lisle had the ball in the net, but a goal was ruled out as the referee, in consultation with his linesman, adjudged the ball had been over the goal-line before being crossed.
Duff struck the crossbar with a great shot.
In the 53rd minute, Caley went two ahead. Robertson outstripped Somerville in a race for a pass from Hercher and cut in on the goal before nonchalantly flighting the ball over the outcoming keeper’s head. Connolly came close with a shot which struck the upright.
County were more in the game in the second half.
Billy Ferries produced a magnificent run when he broke from his own half and, cutting inside, beat two, three, and then a fourth defender before hitting the crossbar. It was a great run, one of many which this young winger produces game after game.
A Caley win, but County were anything but overawed by the might of potential champions.
