| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Fort William 1 Ross County 4 Some of the Ross County party did not travel well on their bus journey to Fort William on Saturday, but even so, they played their part in a most satisfying victory. One of those to suffer from travel sickness was Donald Mackay, who was substituted at half-time. On the heavy pitch, County were masters, although they went a goal down just after the start of the second half. From then on, however, they came into their own as their fitness began to tell on the Lochaber team. For the opening 45 minutes, both sides played fast, entertaining football in what was to prove a very sporting encounter. Fort William opened the scoring in the 48th minute when Masson struck a ball through the County defence during a goalmouth melee as one of his colleagues was lying in the back of the net! Straight from the kick-off, Billy Ferries, who was Man of the Match, made a strong run down the right wing and crossed to James Mackay, who simply turned the ball into the net. Ross County were in complete control. Substitute Alan Gair revelled in the conditions and had a hand in two of the goals, which followed. From the centre circle, Alan split the Fort William defence with a perfect pass, which Dave Jackson took in his stride and shot home in the 60th minute. In the 68th minute, the "sub" lobbed a Fort clearance back into the home penalty area, and Connolly, with appeals for "offside" ringing in his ears, strode on to whip the ball home. Dave Jackson completed the scoring in the 74th minute following a break by Ferries, who, with the keeper to beat, pushed a pass into the striker, who scored. Again there were claims for "offside", but the goal stood. |
