Ross County 6 Inverness Clachnacuddin 2

Taking the field under referee W. Shanks, Elgin, both teams displayed signs of start-of-season nerves, with resultant erratic play. Settling down, Clach took the offensive when Urquhart miskicked, but Pines put the ball to corner. Browning and Patience next had opportunities but weak finishing brought no results, and Macdougall was not seriously tried. Tommy Urquhart got away with a ball from Browning, but the visiting defence stood firm. Play was forced to the County end, where W. Urquhart saved the situation, and when Farmer was fouled, Browning had hard luck with a ball that seemed to be screwing awkwardly. Play up till now was rarely above average, and winger Urquhart was well-watched by Baxter. First blood came to the homesters, when Patience sent a nice ball to Ferguson, who beat Macdougall all ends up. This put a different complexion on the tempo, and when minutes after, W. Urquhart scored a classic goal from a penalty, the crowd was not slow to show its appreciation of sound work. Number three came from Ferguson, who cleverly slipped the defence and placed the ball well out of Macdougall’s reach. Ferguson and Patience were working well together, with the visitors becoming unsettled as County kept consolidating their lead—3-0.
On resumption, County continued to force the pace and went further ahead when Ferguson accounted with a free kick after Patience had been fouled by Baxter. They made the most of Clach weakness in defence and looked winners all the time. But when Farmer handled in the box, Maclean made no mistake about his side’s first goal. The same player secured number two for Clach, Newton making a brilliant effort to save. Macdougall, at the other end, also brought off a splendid save when Simpson drove a hard ball. In the closing minutes County’s sixth goal was registered when Patience was marksman.
A large attendance of supporters were delighted both with their team’s substantial win and the tactics of old favourites. Clach, although playing some nice football, did not profit by it, and were penned for most of the time to their own territory.
