| Match Report | Report from the Inverness Courier. Ross County 2 Inverness Thistle 1 Ross County and Inverness Thistle deserve credit for the thrilling start to the football season which they provided enthusiasts in Ross-shire and Inverness with their series of games in the second round of the Highland League Cup. Their fourth game at Dingwall on Saturday ended, like all its predecessors, in a draw of one goal each, and it was in an extra half-hour's play that County, the side which lasted the pace better, emerged victorious by a single goal. On Saturday's play and over the series of games the County just deserved their narrow victory, although the result might well have gone in Thistle's favour. In the first half on Saturday the County players were strangely subdued, and Thistle were value for their one-goal lead at half-time, secured 35 minutes after the start by Fraser, who headed the ball past Newton from a perfectly-placed cross by Willie Gray. In the second half, however, it was the County who dictated play, but even so Thistle might have gone ahead as a result of upfield raids which spelled danger for the Ross-shire team, the ball on one occasion striking the bar with Newton unable to save. The Thistle goal, too, had some miraculous escapes, Sievewright, on one occasion, kicking the ball off the goal-line when a score seemed inevitable. George Sutherland, the County captain, was taken from the defence to play centre-forward, and he it was who got the equalising goal. Throughout the extra time the County had the better of the exchanges against the gallant, but tiring, Thistle team, but at half-time there was still no scoring. Five minutes from the end Sutherland flung himself forward to head the ball past Mackintosh in the Thistle goal, and an epic series of games ended in a narrow victory for the County. The feature of the game, as with its predecessors, was the superiority of the respective defences in comparison with the forwards, but in such a gruelling match criticism of individual players would be unfair when all gave of their best for the entertainment of a crowd of about 500, which included about a thousand enthusiasts from Inverness—Thistle, Caledonian and Clachnacuddin supporters, and many who own allegiance to no particular team but like to see a hard-fought game. |
