Ross County 5 Fraserburgh 3

Ross County’s first home fixture of the season in the Highland League with Fraserburgh as opposition, provided few thrills and very little good football. If anything the Broch men appeared the steadier and better trained combine, and an adverse score of 5-3 in favour of County was not an exactly true assessment. The first half was tame and scrappy with repeated signs of weakness in County defence, but they were able to turn the tables on their opponents after the latter led by 3.
After fifteen minutes of dull play, Fraserburgh drew blood when their centre forward sent in a soft ball which Newton came out to meet and unaccountably missed—an unusual happening with him. A strong sun placed County at a certain disadvantage which may have aided the first score, and Patience was slow in clearing. Fraserburgh now kept up the pressure and could do little wrong. Smith got away with the ball and narrowly missed, to be immediately followed by Sutherland who made no mistake in scoring number two. County defence appeared slack and uncertain, the only sound work coming from J. Findlay. A third goal for the visitors came soon after when Taylor seized an opportunity and drove hard past Newton. Taylor again had a good try which just missed the mark.
With this formidable lead against them, County play brightened, and Ogilvie missed with his head. The finest goal of the afternoon, however, came from Tommy Urquhart, who shot in a sharp ball which had Geddes completely beaten. In an attempt to get at the ball, the Broch goalkeeper was injured, but continued play after treatment. The pace smartened up considerably from a Rose point of view and on half-time Clark scored a nice goal from a Ferguson cross.
Resumption of play saw the County all out for the equaliser. The visitors’ end was repeatedly invaded. Ferguson had a good try and Urquhart hit an upright with another scoring chance. With sun and wind in their favour, County pressed continuously. A corner from Urquhart was well-placed, Geddes cleverly cleared and George Sutherland caught the rebound from which he scored. Next minute, Fraserburgh were through, but Newton made a brilliant clearance. A confident appeal for a penalty by County was disallowed, the free kick by Ferguson going over the bar. Fraserburgh were always ready to take a chance and by no means were they out of the picture; their clever positional play giving them a big advantage.
Urquhart, however, kept forcing the pace, and Ferguson scored off one of the winger's numerous crosses. An improvement in the County defence was notable and J. Findlay was outstanding. The Fraserburgh attack was always dangerous and could not be taken liberties with. J. Macdonald, County right half, was injured and had to go off. Newton, at this period, put in some spectacular work, a save from a ball by Smith being particularly clever. In going through, Urquhart was brought down. Ferguson took the kick outside the twenty-five yard line, and beat Geddes, to make the score five goals to three in County favour. Fraserburgh strained hard to reduce the leeway, while a final penalty kick saw Ferguson shoot narrowly past.
