| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Ross County 1 Inverness Thistle 3 Ross County appears a somewhat weakened team without Tommy Urquhart, who is still on the "off" list. In their fixture at Victoria Park, Dingwall, last Saturday, against Inverness Thistle, with whom they drew the previous week at Inverness, they were also without the services of Sutherland and Findlay. All of which may have retarded the sparkle of the goal-scoring unit so much in evidence earlier in the season. However, J. Macdonald and R. MacMahon, who appeared for their home eleven, justified their selection, the latter scoring County's only goal, against Thistle's three. Thistle rarely let an opportunity pass, and their defence was rock-like, with Christie a sound custodian. They also gave instances of really clever combination, which paid its due reward. Ross County, especially in the second half, came more into their wonted stride, but goals seemed to elude them. A little more steadiness in finishing off might have made all the difference. Play was fairly even at the start, until Bartlett headed in a perfect cross from Gray, which Newton did not appear to see with the sun in his face. Next in the picture was J. Macdonald with one of the prettiest long shots ever seen at Victoria Park, but Christie was ready. Gibson missed an opportunity when he handled a fast cross from Bartlett, and minutes later Christie cleared smartly a dangerous cross from Clark. Number two for the opposition came when, following mid-field play, Inkster got in with a hard low drive. Wemyss next tested Newton, but the latter cleared confidently, and then away to the other end, where Christie put in the best piece of work of the afternoon when he touched a rocket-like ball from Bremner round the post. On resumption County were straining to make up the leeway, and a move by Clark saw Ogilvie with the ball, but Christie gave nothing away. It was Thistle, however, who took the next point, when Wemyss got the ball and sent in a low drive after Patience had missed a Mackinnon clearance. The Inverness men were well in the picture again, until MacMahon sent in a shot that had Christie beaten. County were invigorated by the point, and MacMahon nearly repeated the dose, but Christie saved at full stretch. Bremner failed with what looked a likely chance, and the whistle went without further scoring. While there is no call for dismay, County have certainly played with more inspiration. The fact remains, however—and facts are "chiels that winna ding"—that Urquhart cannot return to his position soon enough for the benefit of the team as a whole. |
