| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Ross County 0 Elgin City 3 Apart from the importance of the semifinal of the North of Scotland Cup between such two doughty opponents as Ross County and Elgin City, interest in the game at Victoria Park last Saturday was heightened with the appearance as the Ross centre-forward of Sandy Willox, ex-Alloa and Lossiemouth player, who had been signed on for County the previous afternoon. Although Willox captained the losing team, his work was excellent, and greatly impressed the large crowd of spectators. With a little more support from his fellow team-mates, the result could have been a different one. The Ross selection appeared without one or two of the regular players, rested through injuries. Mr A. Harrower, Keith, had charge of the game, and Elgin, winning the toss, took advantage of a strong wind. They opened strongly and within a minute Armstrong scored from a Logie pass. The visitors were impressing with their style of play, and took full advantage of every opportunity. After 20 minutes they went ahead again through Logie, who accepted a pass from Armstrong and went on to beat Newton. The adverse balance seemed to be rattling the Ross men, but they made determined efforts to even things up. Willox had some really clever moves, but too often he did not get the required support. There appeared to be a slowness in the Ross forward line. Findlay had a strong drive which smacked the upright. But Elgin again applied pressure and number three came before the interval. The marksman was Grant, whose goal from 35 yards was one of real cup-tie vintage. Ross County, on resumption, switched Farmer to inside right, and straightaway he tested Munro with a long-range ball. For the next thirty minutes the homesters were giving a good account of themselves, but over-eagerness, with resultant inaccurate shooting, paid no dividends. Rough play kept cropping up, with referee Harrower issuing warnings, and taking Armstrong's name. Willox was prominent throughout this half and on several occasions nearly did it. Browning, Bremner and Farmer also had bad luck when finishing off, but Elgin retained their 3-0 lead until the final whistle went. On play, their victory was deserved. |
