| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Ross County 2 Inverness Thistle 1 In this second leg of the first round of the Mogganti League Cup competition, Ross County, at Dingwall, made a valiant attempt to wipe out the three goal deficit recorded against them at Inverness in the first leg. Up to a point they looked like succeeding, but they fell away in the second half, and the task proved too formidable. Inverness Thistle won on the aggregate by 6 goals to 4. The game opened at a good pace and the ball travelled fast from end to end. Kennedy, a new goalkeeper from Fortrose, who is serving with the R.A.F., who volunteered for the game, quickly showed his ability when he brilliantly saved a strong shot from Owens. Thistle for a time pressed strongly, but Forsyth and Ross defended stubbornly and gradually the Ross halves and forwards took a better grip. Macinnes was the most dangerous forward for the Thistle, and he gave Ross a harassing time. He got little support, however. Ferguson, ever active in front, had a great try with his head and just failed. The next minute he made amends when he walked past three men and calmly placed the ball into an unprotected goal. Greatly encouraged, County attacked with confidence and both Ferguson and Cameron missed narrowly. Up to half-time Ross County held the upper hand, but could not increase their score. Turning round, County continued on the offensive, and for a long period hemmed in the Thistle defenders. Urquhart had a good opportunity of scoring when he received a perfect pass from Cameron. Minutes later, Cameron sent in a shot which Macdonald was lucky to clear. A goal was due, however, and when Urquhart connected with a Clark cross, he drove it high into the rigging. On the aggregate, Thistle had now only a lead of a goal, and County hopes rose high—too quickly. From the kick-off, Gray got the ball, and beating four men, drove the ball into the net. It was a shock goal—it all happened so quickly that many of the spectators did not see it. It certainly demoralised Ross County. They appeared to lose heart and the game slackened visibly. There were few incidents after this and the game ended without any further scoring. Several of the home players appeared very exhausted at the end. |
