| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Caledonian FC 2 Ross County 4 Caledonian got a distinct shock. To be down three goals at half-time and eventually defeated by 4 goals to 2 on their own ground, was never dreamt of. And there is no doubt that Ross County claimed the honours. But for a brief period in the second half, they were the superior team and the victory was clear cut and more than deserved. The visiting forwards had speed, coupled with combined play, which was difficult to withstand. The Caledonian defenders could not rise to the occasion; they were never allowed to, and but for Burt in goal, their defeat would have been more emphatic. Although the weather overhead was favourable the ground conditions were atrocious. After the snow, frost and thaw in the earlier part of the week, the pitch was soft and treacherous. Still, the game was very fast considering and both teams played with a will, no man sparing himself. The weakness in the Caledonian team lay with the forwards, who lacked combination and were most inept in front of goal, and failed entirely to back up the excellent support they got from a very virile half-back line. No, for the day the Caledonian were up against a better team. From the start, Ross County attacked, but this past, both goalkeepers were frequently, if not dangerously, tested. Both were sound. E. Mackintosh made the best scoring attempt for the home lot, and Newton had to stretch full length to save. At the other end, Burt countered a brilliant Ferguson-Urquhart move, and again had to stretch to clutch a likely scoring chance by Olvie from a corner kick. Burt's charge had another narrow escape when the goalkeeper rushed out to intercept an unmarked Miller. He was beaten by the bounce of the ball, but Cameron miskicked and his second attempt was stopped on the line by Galloway. It was ten minutes from half-time before Ross County got a reward for their persistency. A foul by Rooney in the dreaded area left the referee with no alternative but to point to the spot. G. Sutherland did the needful. From this point Caledonian wilted and, although Wheeler, Macgillivray and Urquhart worked well, they could not stay the smart Ross-shire forwards. Cameron got number two. He got away on his own. Burt made a gallant dive to stop him, but keeping control of the ball, he drove into an empty goal. A third goal was tapped home by Miller, but the spade-work was done by Chisholm, who cut through to give Miller a perfect pass. The goals were well-deserved and the visitors' entire front, and especially Ferguson and Urquhart, were putting in very effective work. After the turn round, the home lot made commendable efforts to reduce the leeway, and Spence and Jack were called upon for the first time in the game to do serious work. Newton was also on top form. Cameron gave Burt another fright and then E. Mackintosh beat Newton, when he headed in a pass from Campbell. With ten minutes to go, Miller got his second goal and his team's fourth. This really ended the game, although in the closing minutes D. Mackenzie beat Newton. |
