Ross County 2 Nairn County 1

The game opened at a good pace, with the visitors more dangerous. Thomson tested Newton. Ferguson retaliated at the other end and Gardner fielded confidently. Urquhart next found himself in good scoring position but lost the opportunity through hesitation. Gardner was applauded when he brilliantly stopped a hard drive by Rankine. The home lot at this stage were having the better of the exchanges, but there was some very wild kicking on both sides, and combination was at a discount.
In the course of a sustained attack, Ross County had several likely chances of opening their account, but fortune did not favour them. Both Geddes and A. Nicoll were stumbling blocks, with Gardner very sound as the last defender. Nevertheless, the Ross lads should and would have scored had they been a little steadier. Indeed, on occasions, the shooting was deplorable. In the end the pressure did tell. Rankine was fouled in the dreaded area and Ferguson made sure with the "spot" kick.
With a renewed lease of life, Nairn took the offensive, but their finishing also was weak and they were much too easily repulsed. A clever flick by Ferguson saw Gardner beaten, but A. Nicoll, appearing from nowhere, stopped the ball on the goal-line and cleared. Till half-time Ross County were masters, but Gardner defied all their attempts to pass him.
The second half had scarcely been started, when Ogilvie failed twice in quick succession. His first shot went wildly past the post, and his second, a header, was blocked by the cross-bar. Thomson, a foraging centre, on several occasions got away on his own, and was only stopped with difficulty. However, from one of these raids he did equalise. Although closely followed by A. Forsyth, he was able to get in his shot and Newton could not stop it. This livened up the game a little and Ross County went all out. They did score, but again it came as the result of a penalty. Ferguson tricked Nicoll and shot. Gardner was beaten and the ball was travelling into the net, when Geddes stopped it with his hand. He could not be blamed. But the referee was on the alert. Ferguson again took the penalty and put his side one up. Within two minutes there was a third penalty. A. Nicoll stopping a strong shot by Macbeth with his hands to save his body. This time Gardner stopped Ferguson's studied shot with his foot and the ball went past for a corner. There was no further scoring and Ross County won by the odd goal in three. They deserved to win, but the result was in doubt till the final whistle went.
It was not a great game. The kicking was slipshod and there appeared no reason for it. Not a single forward had his shooting boots on and some of the attempts at goal-getting were almost ludicrous. Ogilvie was the hardest worker in the Ross forward line; Macbeth got many chances, but Urquhart apparently developed an inferiority complex. Behind, Patience was outstanding. For Nairn, Gardner, Thomson and the two Nicolls were best.
