| Match Report | Report From the Ross-shire Journal. Ross County 5 20th Training Battalion 8 Ross County fulfilled their first engagement in the North of Scotland League on Saturday, when they met the 20th Training Battalion, Cameron Barracks, Inverness, in the Victoria Park, Dingwall. The visitors won by 8 goals to 5. They were the better team all over, although for - minutes in the second half they were played to a stand-still. This period was the feature of the game. Six goals behind, the County staged a come-back and scored no fewer than five goals. They looked like equalising, when from a breakaway Glassey, Raith Rovers, scored the seventh goal for his team and his own fifth. This was the turning point in the game. The County lost heart and to make it worse, Spence gave away a silly penalty, which was converted. Play opened very evenly and for ten minutes there was little difference between the teams. Ogilvie got an opportunity to score but failed with his shot at goal. Gradually the visitors, who included several professional footballers in their team, showed their superiority, and when Glassey opened the scoring it was no more than was deserved. The outstanding player on the field was Leishman at left half. He fed his wing to perfection. He paved the way for three goals in quick succession and Glassey, who was shooting magnificently with his left foot, gave Shearer little chance with a raking shot into the top corner of the net. Frater followed with another, shooting into goal with Shearer out of position. A penalty scored by Newcombe brought the total to six. Assisted by a slight breeze, the County took the game in hand right from the start of the second half. Under considerable pressure the soldiers gave away a penalty. Spence took the kick, but Hayes saved brilliantly. Undaunted, Ross County continued their offensive, and Macbeth opened their account with a goal from close in. Bremner followed with another five minutes later. He got away on the wing and shot from an acute angle. Hayes got down to it at the corner of the post, but could not hold the ball. From the kick-off Connel got the ball from Forsyth, who had changed places with Spence. He scampered down the left wing and crossed into the goal mouth. Macbeth, lying unmarked, easily beat Hayes. The crowd was delighted, and when Bremner scored a fourth, after a bout of passing between Ogilvie, there was great cheering. Connel again came into the limelight when, with reckless daring, he charged the ball into the net between Hayes and Pett. The County was all out for the equaliser, when Glassey, lying well up the field, beat Shearer with a low ball which slipped in between Shearer and the post. This gave the soldiers much needed confidence and to time and they held their own. |
