| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Ross County 2 Inverness Clachnacuddin 4 After their defeat in the first round of the Qualifying Cup competition, Ross County got the opportunity of turning the tables on Clachnacuddin last Saturday, when the teams met under League auspices. For a second Saturday the County had to submit to defeat. The visitors proved the more steady and more skilful team, and yet in some respects were fortunate to win. They were clearly the better team in the first half, although opposed to a strong wind, and distinctly deserved their lead by 2 goals to 1 at halftime. In the second half, Ross County started off with great dash. They equalised and for a time they were all over the Clach. Recovering, Clach scored other two goals and ran out winners by 4 goals to 2. Winning the toss, Clach chose to play against the wind, which was blowing towards the canal goal. Notwithstanding, by keeping the ball on the ground and placing it to advantage, the visitors attacked consistently. Two corners followed in quick succession, but both were easily cleared. For the County Connell, on occasions, got away, but found Mackay a stiff obstacle. The Clach played the offside game to advantage and several times the County forwards were held up. Kippax, Burnley, was the fancied man in the Clach forward line. Fast and with good ball control, he was very dangerous, and it was from one of his crosses that the scoring opened, Mackenzie sending home a shot which Bould could not reach. Following this, Forsyth policed Kippax to such an extent that the others neglected him. Ross County's reply to the score was strong, and Storey had to be lively to stop a hot shot from Yule, who was proving one of the County's most active forwards. But punch was lacking in the home attack. They were doing well in mid-field, but when they reached the penalty area they faded away. They did get the equaliser, and it came as a surprise. Connell sent the ball over from the wing. Yule appeared from nowhere and the ball was in the net. This success was short-lived. First Kippax and Bould collided in the goalmouth. Both had to retire, Yule put on Bould's jersey and immediately held a great shot from Mackenzie. Sutherland, however, beat him with a well-placed free kick from outside the penalty area. Both injured resumed, but neither was fit. The second half opened with Ross County attacking. Within a minute they had their reward. Stewart, the young centre-forward, equalising from close in. Greatly stimulated, Ross County harassed the Clach defence, and to such an extent that the defenders were kicking in all and any direction to avert disaster. They held out and with the County easing off the Clach took up the offensive. They were more fortunate, for Sutherland gave them the lead when he repeated his first-half performance by scoring from a free kick 20 yards out. This was the turning point. The County never recovered, and when Fleming beat Bould, who was unsighted, the League points were lost. All over it was a scrappy game with the more methodical team winning. |
