Ross County 4 Inverness Thistle 2

This game took place on the Victoria Park, Dingwall, on Saturday.
Both teams gave a good display. Ross County deserved their win, although perhaps the margin was somewhat wide. With a score of 3-1 against them in the first half, Thistle staged a come-back early in the second half. This was made possible when the veteran Pike transferred from left back to inside left and Cowie went into the half-line. Success came quickly, and Pike reduced the leeway to one goal. In ten minutes, this was nullified when Macdonald beat Simpson and again put his side two up. This disheartened the visitors, and they never looked like saving the game.
In the first half, the County scored first, although this was all against the run of play. The close and accurate passing of the Thistle half backs was very effective up to a point. Their progress up the field was good, but it invariably fizzled out when the defence was reached, Winter putting up a grand show as a third back, and Newton being very safe between the sticks.
On the other hand, the raids made by the County were ever dangerous. Macdonald registered first, a low ball from him beating Simpson at the corner of the post. The second goal followed a well-placed free kick by Winter. Cowie missed his kick and Ogilvie gave Simpson no chance to save. The Thistle goal came from Robertson. Getting the ball in mid-field, he ran into position, and from 30 yards sent in a terrific shot, which few goalkeepers could have stopped. The count was well-deserved. Ross County's third goal came from Clark, who ran in from the right to shoot across the goal into the net. There were many defensive mistakes on both sides; indeed four of the six goals scored were the result of blunders. The hero of the game was Winter, the home centre half. During the opening spell, he thwarted the Thistle forwards time and again and throughout the game consistently held Macrae, the opposing centre. Forsyth was not as sound as usual; Moir got through a great deal of hard work. The three inside men were all good, without being brilliant. Griffin was the brains of the line.
Pike was the Thistle's best man, but when he changed position, he strengthened the attack at the expense of the defence. Robertson was the best half and Kay the most consistent in front.
