| Match Report | Report from the North Star. Ross County 0 Nairn County 1 The standard of play in the League games will have to improve considerably before they will become paying propositions. Last Saturday's match at Victoria Park, Dingwall, which was listless, was a typical example of the football which characterises these league fixtures. The absence of the real competitive spirit has made the games dull and uninteresting for the spectators, who are complaining about the fare provided. In fact the general sporting public do not seem to take much interest in the competition with the result that attendances at every match have been disappointing. Already several clubs are feeling the financial strain on their limited resources and it is likely some clubs will be forced to withdraw unless they receive more support in the near future. The meeting of the two Counties, Ross and Nairn, did not prove a thriller. The opening stages were promising but gradually the proceedings became so lackadaisical that the final whistle was welcomed. At the commencement Nairn were the more impressive and Mackenzie, in the home goal, was kept busier than Watson. The first real effort came from Mennie, Nairn's outside left, who forced Mackenzie to bring off a brilliant save. At the visiting end, Macdonald was presented with a fine opening but the home right-half shot over the bar. Then Mennie again tested Mackenzie with a hard drive. Clever work by Macdonald and Birrell resulted in Urquhart having a golden opportunity but the home left winger finished by shooting into Watson's hands. With play running evenly, Nairn got a gift goal, Forsyth, centre half, handled inside the penalty area and Bowie netted from the spot. Immediately after the resumption the homesters were awarded a penalty but Watson saved smartly from Forsyth. Although the homesters did the bulk of the attacking their forwards could not penetrate the visiting defence, Watson being particularly sound in goal. The home attack was inclined to be too elaborate, while direct methods would have been much more remunerative. Towards the close Nairn took command, and Mackenzie was kept active with tries from Manderson and Webster. Nairn were awarded another penalty against Forsyth for handling, but Bowie sent the spot kick past the upright. |
