Ross County 4 Huntly 2

At Dingwall, Ross County had to avenge the result of the previous week at Huntly. They succeeded but not with so handsome a score as their opponents. The surprise, however, was not so much the game as the formation of the loss County team. Barrie, the player coach, went into the centre and Gowl out to the extreme right. Forsyth became pivot and W. Urquhart, a junior, was placed at outside-left. The changes were not perhaps ideal, but at least it can be said that the play of the team as a whole showed a considerable improvement on previous matches.
Huntly went away with a rush and for a time did most of the pressing. Ross County, however, rallied and the first real danger came from them when Wood just failed to register. Wood was giving Urquhart, a junior out for the first time, excellent support and the outside-left was responding well.
At the other end, Stewart made a mess of a good opening. He also erred when he got off-side when his team were attacking consistently. Cruickshanks was doing good work. On one occasion he tricked three opponents, only to finish weakly. Indeed, up to this point, it was lapses in front of goal alone that kept Huntly from counting.
Ross County were not much better in this respect and several likely opportunities went begging. Eventually the visitors scored through Stewart, who headed into the net, giving Applegate no chance. This came after 35 minutes and was well deserved. As half-time was approaching, Ross County improved and when Barrie equalised, the home lot became inspired. The goal was the result of a perfect cross from Gowl and Barrie had only to push it home. The performance was repeated a few minutes later, Barrie converting another Gowl cross. At half-time Ross County led by 2 goals to 1.
On resuming, the game for a time was very even. There was some good combined play by Huntly, but at the goalmouth the forwards were held by the County defence and particularly by Applegate, who was giving nothing away. Twice in succession he intercepted strong shots from Gordon. A shot from Cruickshanks almost beat him, but Shand, who picked up the rebound, missed a great opportunity.
Barrie completed his hattrick when Mackay crossed neatly from the right. Gowl had a good try at the other end, but although he failed, success followed immediately. Wood was interfered with in the penalty area and Mackay kicked from the "spot" with deadly certainty.
Just before the close, Applegate tried to stop a high shot, but did not get it cleanly and Stewart calmly headed the ball home. This was all the scoring and the game finished Ross County, 4: Huntly, 2.
The County just deserved to win, but had Huntly taken advantage of all their chances, the result might have been different. The successes in the County team were Applegate in goal, Forsyth at centre-half and Urquhart and Gowl on the extreme wings. Gowl surprised many people with his go-ahead style and his crossing of the ball into the goalmouth. Urquhart promises well. He looks as if he is to succeed where many have failed, at outside-left. Macdonald was a hard worker as a wing-half and both backs held their own. Barrie was clever as the leader and he deserves credit for his three goals. Huntly had no passengers. All they lacked was shooting forwards.
