| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Buckie Thistle 2 Ross County 3 Ross County continue in their sound position in the Highland League, and on Saturday they contrived to increase their points when they defeated Buckie Thistle by the odd goal in five. The game, however, would have been better value for a draw. Buckie were unfortunate in having to do without the services of Laing and Bain, whose places were taken by Frank Smith at left-half, and Glass at inside right. A strong sun and breeze troubled Buckie from the start. Ross County were quick on the way, and Buckie fought hard, with Glass missing the goal. After ten minutes' play the visitors surprisingly opened the scoring. Urquhart sent in a shot which Wood made no effort to save, the goal-keeper evidently taking it for granted that the shot was kicked from an offside position. The referee thought different, and County went ahead by one goal. Buckie took up a strong line to make good the deficiency, which was not long delayed. Duncan smartly cut through the opposition and crossed to Calder, who took an easy chance of equalising from close in. A dour tussle for supremacy ensued, with both keepers in action. Buckie against the wind, were impressive now, and only the brilliant play by Applegate kept the County goal intact. Ross County did not slacken pressure and good play was rather wasted through the forwards' poor marksmanship at goalmouth. The interval arrived with the match all square. On resumption everything pointed to the homesters going ahead with the wind advantage, but County came on again determined to take the lead. Back-passing tactics nearly cost Buckie a goal, which did come when a slip by Ross gave the agile Highlanders a chance which Gowl promptly took and netted. At this point the game was fast and interesting, with Thistle launching a renewed attack. It was only their due when Duncan put over a flag-kick which Calder saw safely into the net. With the score again level, it looked as if Thistle, with the wind in their favour, would go out to win, but Gowl, ever the opportunist, cleverly beat Wood. Applegate's superb custody of the goal prevented Buckie from scoring. Towards the finish chances went agley through weak shooting and the final whistle blew with the visitors secure in their victory. |
