| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Nairn County 3 Ross County 2 Owing to injured players, Ross County had to travel to Nairn with a depleted team. They did well, therefore, in only being defeated by the odd goal. Jack, Muir of Ord, was unable to travel. Mackay had to be brought from the right wing to left back. Truly he is a utility man. McMahon, Dingwall, was introduced to the wing and alongside of him was a junior from Invergordon. Nairn County were at full strength. The struggle was a dour one for the full ninety minutes. Perhaps the home lot did give a better display of football, but it could never be said that they dictated the play. Even when three goals down in the second-half, Ross County declined to yield and before the finish they had scored twice and just missed a golden opportunity of what might have proved an equaliser. The home forwards combined well at the start, Chisholm, in particular, being prominent, and the Ross County defence was well tested. After seven minutes Nairn opened the scoring. Clever interpassing between Mackinnon and Campbell enabled Macdonald to go through and beat Applegate with an oblique shot. Mackinnon again let Macdonald away, but on this occasion the winger sent past the post. Where Ross County failed was in front of goal. They made rapid progress with long wing passing, but when they reached the goal area they frittered away their chances. On two occasions McMahon might have finished better; otherwise he was quite good. Gillies tried hard to show the way. One tremendous shot from him was luckily deflected by a defender. Nairn opened the second half with another strong attack and when Birrell worked the ball cleverly he left Mackinnon with the easiest of chances and he did not fail. Shortly after, a similar move by Birrell saw Mackenzie put his side three ahead. It was then that Ross County staged a revival. Gowl, from short range, reduced the arrears after Bowie had miskicked. Much encouraged the Dingwall team set to work with great determination and fourteen minutes from the end McMahon secured a second goal. Nairn revived and Applegate was conspicuous with several fine saves. Near the close Ross County strained every nerve to equalise, but the Nairn defence held out successfully. Result—Nairn County, 3; Ross County, 2. The outstanding players were:—Nairn County—Birrell, Bowie, Chisholm, Fraser and Noble. Ross County—Applegate, Munro, Forsyth, Gillies and Gowl. |
