| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Caledonian FC 4 Ross County 2 Both teams showed changes from the previous week. Caley fielded a new player—Macvicar, a Nelson defender, who displaced Reid, while Thomson returned as leader in place of Macdonald. Urquhart was an absentee from the County team, and the berth was filled by Murray. Spence, a reserve, came in as centre forward, while Gowl went to outside right; Jack resumed in defence. Right from the start the home team attacked and twice Applegate's charge was in danger. Jack blocked a terrific shot from Bartlett in the goalmouth, following which Applegate cleared from Thomson. Getting the rebound, Rooney lashed the ball over the bar. Getting over this early fright, Ross County showed their mettle. They could not master the Caledonian defence, however. Gillies headed a cross from Gowl just past the upright. Immediately afterwards Gowl had a fine run on the wing. He sent across a perfect centre, but there was no one up to take advantage of it. Macvicar displayed his capabilities as a marksman with a lovely long range shot which Applegate fielded in grand style. Murray was County's most dangerous forward at this stage, and he had two brilliant tries for goal. Caley took the lead after 23 minutes' play. Mackinnon gained control some distance out, tore past Munro and Forsyth, and gave Applegate no chance with a fast low shot. Five minutes later County got the equaliser. Mackay initiated the successful raid with a pass to Gowl, who had taken up his proper position at centre-forward. Gowl eluded Matheson, and slipped the leather out to Murray, who immediately re-centred to find Spence tearing forward and lashing the ball past Mackintosh. Play of an equal character marked the following exchanges, and both goals were visited in quick succession. Bartlett went right through for Caley, but miskicked at point-blank range. County took the lead five minutes before the interval. Gowl did the spade-work, slipped the ball forward for Murray to run through and score. Caley ended the half with a determined raid, and it was only with great difficulty that Applegate saved his fort from Thomson. Early in the second-half the County defence was at full stretch. The crossbar saved a strong shot from Bartlett, while Applegate stopped a shot from Armstrong at the foot of a post. Strong pressure was bound to tell and eventually the equaliser came through Thomson after a scrimmage in the goal mouth. Main dispossessed Gowl when the County centre broke through. The ball went to Murray, who centred prettily for Mackay to sweep the ball close to the crossbar. A spell of Caley pressure followed and Thomson, Armstrong and Mackinnon were prominent with fine tries for goal. Following a strong attack by Ross County, Thomson gave Caledonian the lead with a brilliant effort. Mackinnon ran through on the left and provided a perfect pass for the centre to head home. Shortly afterwards Applegate was injured and had to be carried off the field. Munro took his place between the uprights. A neat move, started by Armstrong, almost ended in success for the homesters. The inside-left cleverly slipped the leather to Thomson, who in turn passed to Mackinnon. The winger swung past Mackay, now in defence, but had no chance to direct his shot. After an absence of several minutes, Applegate resumed in goal. Shortly after, however, Caledonian consolidated their position, when Mackinnon first-timed a low drive by Thomson past Applegate, to score his team's fourth goal. The County made a stout bid to reduce the leeway. Forsyth and Wood set their forwards going time and again, but always the quintette was balked by a defence who took no chances. The visitors put up a good fight until the end, but all their endeavours were in vain. Final score: Caledonian 4 Ross County 2 |
