| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Rothes Victoria 4 Ross County 4 This game took place at Rothes. The pitch was so water-logged that before the interval play was nothing more or less than a farce. All over the field were pools of water, and for once players could be excused missing easy scoring chances. A draw was a fitting result. But it was only through a last-minute effort by Ross for Rothes the points were divided. Neither eleven were in a position to give of their best as regards combined play, and the players walked their way through the game. Although County always held superiority in goals until the last minute, Vies were decidedly unlucky not to have run out winners by a margin of two or three goals. In the first half County were an enter. prising lot, but were definitely not worth a 3-1 interval lead. Honours go to both defences, particularly the visiting trio, Applegate, Munro and Sutherland. The visiting half-backs stuck to their task with the grimmest determination. But their efforts to keep the ball upfield were not too successful. Black and Urquhart, extreme wingers, were best of a good front line. Although Gowl was well policed, he made several grand openings for his colleagues, besides scoring twice himself. In Victoria’s ranks Brian was not his usual confident self. Nevertheless, some of hiz saving was materful. Innes and Clark kicked with great effect. But some of their tackling was a little too robust. Rothes have a good half-line, with Wilson, centre-half, the dominating figure. Summerrell and Cobban worked like Trojans, but the forwards were siow to take advantage. Meldrum was a dashing winger but inclined to hold the ball too long. Ross was subdued by the visiting pivot but got the all-important counter. The Grant-Shewan left wing failed to strike a happy combine. Bui the former was to the fore with several solo efforts. County netted twice in the early stages through Mackay and Gowl. Grant converted a penalty kick for Rothes. A few minutes from the interval Gowl restored the two goal lead when he scored from a free kick just outside the penalty box. On the resumption Rothes fought back strongly, and got on level terms through Shewan and Davidson. County again took the lead when Murray hooked home from a crowd of players. Although Rothes launched attack after attack on the visiting goal, they were denied the equaliser until the last minute, when Ross was the marksman. |
