Inverness Thistle 6 Ross County 1 Ross County suffered their heaviest defeat of the season at Kingsmills Park, Inverness, on Saturday, the Thistle registering a 6 goals to 1 victory. For the first quarter of an hour, the County were the superior side and worthily took the lead against a strong wind. With the Thistle only holding a 3-1 lead at the interval, it looked as if the County had very bright prospects of securing a win, particularly after shaping so well in the first half. The County, however, gave a very disappointing display with the wind in their favour, the majority of the players showing a poor conception of how to control the ball in the gusty elements. Had the County played as well after the interval as they did before it, the Thistle would have been forced to concede at least one league point. In a County team, which failed badly and can give a better display, the only players to maintain their reputations were Macneil, goalkeeper, Moir, left half, Morgan Mackay, centre forward, and J. A. Ross, inside left. The County centre was very lively but his hard work was in vain, for his other club-mates in front were badly off form.
Pyke was early in the eye as Thistle had advantage of a strong wind. Good work on the County right ended in M. Mackay narrowly missing with his head. When practically right through Pyke shot against the 'keeper. Macneil did well when he saved at full stretch a long shot by Pyke. At the other end Mackay sent narrowly past. After sixteen minutes' play M. Mackay took advantage of a slackness in Thistle's defence to give his side the lead. Thistle retaliated and Pyke was again in the limelight and Macneil just managed to save. The equaliser came when Macdonald sent in a hard drive. Shortly afterwards Clunas gave them the lead with a great shot which gave the 'keeper no chance. Thistle were now playing with great vigour and Gowl increased their lead.
Ross County resumed with a re-arranged forward line. Kay further increased the home lead and immediately afterwards Clunas scored number five from a penalty given for Gowl being fouled. Despite the fact that they had the wind and heavy rain to contend with Thistle were all over the County and Clunas beat Macneil to obtain his hat-trick. In a breakaway at the other end, the County were presented with numerous chances but failed miserably. After good work by G. Macdonald, the home left winger, the ball went narrowly over. Ross County came a little more into the picture but they never looked dangerous. Clunas and Kay were prominent with some fine combined work on the Thistle right wing. The County had the ball in the net, but the referee had previously blown for a foul against a Thistle defender. Content with their big lead, the Thistle forwards were inclined to be careless in their finishing.
