| Match Report | Report from the North Star. Elgin City 5 Ross County 2 Ross County put up a splendid first half fight at Boroughbriggs, Elgin, on Saturday, but after the change-over they faded away. In fact, if the forwards had taken their opportunities in the opening period, the result might have been different. Two County players, however, came out of the ordeal with greatly enhanced reputations. J. G. Mackay, right half, had no equal afield in positional play. He was an ideal wing half. The player who captivated the large crowd was D. Ross, the County outside left. He simply toyed with all opposition and left the City defenders standing bewildered with his lightning flashes down the wing. Ross's dribbling was also amazing and no opponent could check his dangerous raids and centres into the home goal. He finished a grand afternoon's work with a goal which was a masterpiece of anticipation. Louden did not know he was defeated until he took the ball out of the net. It was a great error in tactics that the County did not give D. Ross as much of the ball in the second half as in the earlier stage. He was almost neglected after the change-over. Elgin forced a corner in the first run upfield and Gervaise whipped across a lovely ball but Corbett punted clear. Another two corners followed but Gervaise put both balls behind. Smart work by Cormack had the Dingwall defence in difficulties. Maclennan's parting effort went wide. With fifteen minutes gone Ross County scored a rather lucky goal. An Elgin defender, in attempting to clear, shot against Mackay's leg and the ball went into the far side of the net. A great shot by Maclennan brought the scores level ten minutes later. A fine passing bout between Maclennan and Cormack ended in the winger beating Macneil all ends up from thirty yards. The shouting had hardly died down when an innocent-looking run upfield culminated in D. Ross shooting the ball past Lowden from a narrow angle. Elgin were taking some time to realise that Cormack, on the left wing, was their potential match-winner and the winger had to forage too much for himself. Near the interval a snap shot by Maclennan scraped the bar with Macneil out of position. Lowden had an anxious moment in the opening minutes of the second half, when a fierce shot by A. Mackay flew past the wrong side of the post. A brilliant goal by Cormack put Elgin ahead when a Ross County score seemed imminent. Gervaise raced Brindle and centred. Maclennan sold Corbett the dummy and Cormack slammed the ball hard into the net. Macneil got a cheer when he saved a fine shot from Gervaise. Tempers were beginning to get ruffled, and several players were cautioned by the referee. Elgin were now well on top and clever work by Maclennan allowed Penrose to score from close range. An astute header by Maclennan struck the bar with Macneil well beaten. The crowd were anxious to see Cormack secure his hat-trick, but Munro saw to it that the winger did not get many chances to shoot. Just on time Penrose drove home his side's fifth goal. |
