Ross County 2 Inverness Citadel 0

Ross County easily accounted for Citadel in the first game of the Nairn and District Cup at Victoria Park, Dingwall, on Saturday. This cup is now played on the league principle. Play throughout, although not of a very high standard, was extremely keen and fast, both teams giving a good account of themselves. The first half was fought out on fairly even lines, the respective defences dominating the play. Although no goals were scored both keepers had plenty to handle, Spence, in the Citadel goal, being especially outstanding. The second period found Citadel a spent force, the homesters being decidedly superior. The fact that the score was kept so low reflects great credit on Spence and his backs, Mackay and Macpherson, but it also shows a lack of snappiness in the County forward line, its only bright spark being Morgan Mackay.
Citadel were the first to be dangerous and forced a fruitless corner in the opening minutes. Immediately afterwards Roberton skimmed the bar with a strong drive. Ross County took up the running and Morgan Mackay was just inches out with a great effort. Citadel looked dangerous on several occasions and Macneil had two good clearances. Ross County did the bulk of the pressing but their forwards could do little against the bustling tactics adopted by the Citadel backs. Although no goals were forthcoming, play was very keen, both goals undergoing some narrow escapes. And so it remained until the interval, Citadel, if any, looking the more likely scorers.
The opening of the second half saw Ross County attacking strongly and Spence brought off a great save from Morgan Mackay. He had to admit defeat, however, when the centre headed in a cross from J. A. Mackay. Morgan Mackay should have increased the homesters' lead when he had only Spence to beat but he shot straight at the keeper. Citadel were putting up a valiant fight but it was evident that they had shot their bolt. Moir put the issue beyond doubt when he scored in a goalmouth melee. After this Citadel rarely crossed the half-line, their energies being utilised in keeping their goal from further downfall. In this they succeeded but their task was made much easier by the ineffectiveness of the home front line.
