| Match Report | Report from the North Star. Inverness Thistle 5, Ross County 0 The County gave their poorest display of the season against Thistle, the Highland League leaders, at Kingsmills Park, Inverness, on Saturday. Few players enhanced their reputations, the standard of the County play being very ordinary. At the commencement, the County started as if they were to put up a bold front and fight the issue to the last minute, but this early promise did not materialise, for they flattered only to deceive. On the change-over, however, the County did show a pleasing improvement and for fully twenty minutes the home defence had a gruelling time. The lack of a marksman resulted in no goals being secured, whereas on the run of play they should have scored on three occasions with the numerous opportunities that came their way. The all-round form of the team was not impressive, and it appears that drastic changes will have to be made for the forthcoming cup-ties. Wintry conditions had an adverse effect on the attendance, there being a small turn out of spectators. County won the toss, but were early on the defensive. A first-minute effort by Robertson went narrowly past. County broke away and Ross tested Sherlaw with a high shot, which the goalkeeper cleared. Thistle received a good opening when Gowl got clear away, but the centre shot narrowly past. County were settling down, and a fine piece of play by Fraser culminated in Mackay driving behind. Thistle resumed the defensive and Clunas was a trifle too high with a hot effort. Eighteen minutes from the kick-off, Thistle scored. Ross failed to cover a drive from Clunas and Gowl, rushing in, netted. County fought back and Ross brought Sherlaw to his knees with a fine low shot. At the other end, Clunas again grazed the crossbar with a smashing effort. Later, Thistle again scored. Gowl slipped to Kay, and the winger went through the defence to tap the ball past Ross. County strove hard to score, but Thistle were in great form, and just on the interval Gowl again scored. County showed better form on the restart and the home goal ran a narrow escape when Mackay tested Sherlaw with a terrific drive. A penalty was granted against Thistle, but Macrae shot weakly into the keeper’s hands. County continued the pressure but lack of a marksman saw many good chances go missing. Thistle seemed content to keep the visiting forwards at bay without making any endeavour to score. Luck was with them when a great drive by Mackay hit the bar with Sherlaw well beaten. Clunas beat three men before driving past Ross to score for the homesters. Following this, snow fell heavily and for periods the players were indistinguishable. Had the match been a cup-tie, the game would have been abandoned, because the lines became obliterated. The rest of the game was a severe test on the stamina of the players. Just on the final whistle, Gowl netted with a fine low shot from close in. |
