Caledonian FC 1 Ross County 0

If the County forwards had played as convincingly as their defence, the County would be figuring in the final of the Stuart Cup competition. At the Telford Street park, Inverness, on Saturday, this cup-tie was a drab encounter, the only pleasing feature of a listless game being the grand and sound defensive tactics of the Ross-shire rear divisions. For fully three-quarters of the match, the Ross men attacked, but not one forward seemed capable of defeating Mackenzie. On numerous occasions, the visitors were left with only the goalkeeper to pass, but hesitation or faulty shooting resulted in opportunities being frittered away. During the first half, Ross County pressed almost consistently. Caledonian only crossed the half-way line on five or six occasions. The tries most likely to find the net were from the halves, Macrae and Grant. The former had two shots which flashed past the posts. Even after the crafty prompting of Grant, who lobbed the ball into the home goalmouth, the Ross attack could not finish. The interval arrived with no scoring, whereas the County should have had a winning lead. The resumption witnessed little change. The homesters, with the wind and sun behind them, could make little impression on an opposing defence that cleared its lines cleverly and confidently. More openings came to the visitors’ attack, which showed no improvement. A re-organisation of the County front line did add a little more enthusiasm, but no tangible results ensued. The end was drawing near before the game was decided. A raid by the home forwards ended in Paterson sending in a fine shot, which had the goalkeeper, Gillanders, well beaten. The ball, however, struck the upright and rebounded into play. Macbean was waiting, and he sent it into the net. It proved the only goal, although Ross County made a great endeavour to equalise.
