| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Ross County 0 Huntly 3 After their inglorious exit from the Scottish Qualifying Cup competition, Ross County put an experimental team on the field at Dingwall last Saturday, to meet Huntly under Highland League auspices. S. Mackenzie, Brora, was reintroduced at back, and Macpherson, Beauly, was brought back into the team for the first time this season. Two new forwards were tried, A. Ross and Donald Maclean, both of Dingwall. The experiment was not a success. The game opened somewhat tamely and midfield play ruled for a period, with neither team gaining any advantage, until J. Ross forced a corner, Paul putting the ball past to save his goal. Cumming tried a shot but Paul was very safe. He also held a shot from Maclean, which, however, was on the soft side. Huntly next had a turn. Mitchell carried the ball well up, but Mackenzie cleared the danger. Stewart was keeping his line going well and he was always on the alert for a shot on his own. J. Ross let W. Mackenzie away on the left wing, but there was no one up to clinch his cross—and a good opportunity was lost. Garrow next got through on his own, but finished hopelessly. Again the venue of play changed and the rush up the field was so rapid that the backs were caught napping. Stewart broke through on his own. Mackay came out to meet him and Stewart lobbed the ball over his head into the empty goal. Within two minutes Stewart added number two, the result of a well-placed cross by Mitchell. Ross County did not lie down, but they had little luck. J. Ross was the live wire in the front line, with Cumming a good second, but they could make little impression on the Huntly defence. Macrae had a great shot on his own, which just scraped over the bar. Two corners in quick succession fell to Mackenzie, but both were cleared. Just on half-time, Stewart, from a pass by Ainslie, scored his "hat-trick." In accepting this chance he proved himself a first-class opportunist. Changing ends, Ross County changed their formation, A. Ross going centre, and Maclean to the wing. After a spirited opening attack, Ross County faded away. Huntly, with their three-goal lead, played confidently, but never at any time were they much superior to Ross County. Maclean came nearest scoring for the County when he first struck the crossbar, and again put a strong shot to the foot of the post, which came back into play. There was no scoring this half and the game ended Huntly, 3; Ross County, 0. Towards the close there was a considerable amount of robust play; tempers got frayed, and there were one or two incidents of a regrettable nature. Macpherson got his marching orders, but the referee would not have erred had he made an example of one or two others. |
