| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Highland Light Infantry 2 Ross County 5 Ross County visited Fort George last Saturday and played the Highland Light Infantry in the first round of the Nairnshire Cup competition, which is played on the home-and-home principle. The H.L.I. is in the junior ranks this season, but from their display in this game, it is perfectly evident that next season will see them take a step up. True, Ross County won by 5 goals to 2, but the fact is that the County had all the luck that was going, and two of the goals at least were very doubtful. In the open, the soldiers were equally as good as their opponents, and any attempt at constructive play came from them. Where they failed was in front of goal. Their shooting was weak; otherwise, they would have scored more often. Ross County took the lead early on through a penalty, considered by many spectators and players to be undeserved. J. A. Mackay got the second goal after a breakaway. Just on half-time, Broadbent, who was one of the best of the soldiers’ forwards, scored with a beautiful cross. In the second half, the soldiers’ goalkeeper stopped a brilliant shot from Cumming, which struck the crossbar and came out, but the referee contended that the ball had been inside. This took the heart out of the soldiers, and goals by Mackenzie and Mackay quickly followed, bringing the County’s total to five. Kirtley added a second goal for the soldiers. |
