| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Ross County 2 Peterhead 0 At Dingwall, a very small number of people witnessed a very mediocre game between Ross County and Peterhead. Ross County won by 2 goals to 0, and but for Copland in the Peterhead goal, who played with great confidence, the victory would have been more pronounced. Peterhead missed Townsend, their professional, who is injured, and Ross County were without Cumming, who was rested. At the last moment, a change was effected in Ross County. Macaulay went to outside, Tarrell inside, and Reid went back to the half-line. The opening play was sensational. Peterhead kicked off against the wind. A strong drive by Campbell almost beat Burnett, who failed to get in his kick and gave away a corner. Mackenzie took the kick and Copland fisted out. The ball fell at Campbellās feet and from 25 yards he drove the ball goalwards, and it went into the back of the net without touching anyone. Exactly one minute played. Copland appealed loudly for offside, but Referee Watson, Forres, pointed to the centre. Notwithstanding this shock, Peterhead attacked, and Wiseman harassed Anderson to such an extent that a corner was given away. Nothing resulted. For a considerable time there was little or nothing between the teams. The County were often at the Peterhead end, but that was due to the wind rather than superior play. It was here that Copland shone. Twice in succession he saved strong shots from James Ross. His judgment was excellent. Campbell was at fault when he received a delightful pass from Tarrell. He was absolutely unmarked, but he drove the ball high over the bar. After Copland had saved from Tarrell, Peterhead had a spell of attack, but they were well held by Anderson and Urquhart, and goalkeeper Mackay had an easy time. Half time arrived with the County leading by the only goal scored. With the wind in their favour, Peterhead were expected to do better. It was surprising, therefore, to see the County take up the attack. Mackenzie forced a corner without result. The right wing had resumed its originally intended formation, with the result that it was of more value to the team. Macaulay was playing great football and he kept Tarrell well supplied with the ball. A combined movement between these two resulted in Tarrell scoring number two for his side. His parting shot was driven from an acute angle and it cannoned off Copland into the net. Copland was not to blame; the shot was too strong for him. Peterhead had a good deal of the game in this half, but their forwards could do nothing right, and were somewhat easily disposed of. On the other hand, County forwards were not opposed by a sound defence, and the bulk of the work fell on Copland. He stopped two almost unsaveable shots, one from Mackenzie and another from Tarrell, and fully deserved the approbation he received. There was no further scoring and the game ended Ross County, 2; Peterhead, 0. |
