| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Ross County 3 Highland Light Infantry 2 These teams met in their return match in the Nairnshire Invitation Cup competition at Dingwall on Saturday. In the first game at Fort George, the County won by 5 goals to 2. On Saturday, they won by 3 goals to 2, and they pass on to the final. The soldiers put up a good game and they did not deserve to lose. They were equally as good as the County in every department, and it was only the experience of the County players that kept the H.L.I. from winning. A steadying influence in the half-line might have paved the way to a victory for the Fort George team. Kirtley was the live wire of the forwards and twice he put his team ahead, but sandwiched in between was a beautiful goal by Mackay. Like Kirtley, Mackay was the best in the County’s vanguard. Kirtley’s goals were well-taken and his second was the best of the match. It was taken from an angle on the right and Mackay never saw it as it sailed into the top corner of the net. The soldiers well-deserved their lead at half-time. Resuming, however, the County took a more serious view of matters. Macaulay had greatly improved and when he scored to bring the total to two all, it was no more than he deserved. From this point the visitors were beaten and only Pollandyne in goal kept them out. He saved many brilliant shots and undoubtedly kept down the score. The final result was Ross County 3, H.L.I. 2. Urquhart went forward later in the game, and although he scored the third goal, his movement upset the team. Macaulay also tried the forward line early on, but it was only when he reverted to his own position at half, that he became a success. Macaulay is a born half, with a future. He should not go out of his position. The H.L.I. is too good a team to be in junior football. They are more than good enough for the senior ranks, where it is hoped they will be seen next season. |
