Ross County 5 Inverness Thistle 3

Ross County struck real form last week when they defeated Inverness Thistle by five goals to three. A pleasing note of the County’s victory was the successful return to the team of Ian Aird. The centre made his presence felt in the first few minutes, notching two quick goals, and thus setting his side on the happy way to victory. Before half-time, Aird secured a hat-trick, Urquhart adding a fourth. In reply, Thistle secured two points, the first going in off a County defender, the second being scored by Gowl, whose header was missed by Mackay.
In the second half, the exchanges were always interesting. Aird quickly secured a fifth point—his own fourth. The County pressed but Gowl, collecting a rebound off the County goalkeeper, scored again for Thistle. County kept Thistle on the defence to the end and it was unfortunate that Hendry, the Thistle goalkeeper, had to leave the field. Maclean took the injured goalkeeper’s place, and it was much to his fine efforts in goal that County did not increase their score.
Aird’s return gave the front line of the County the necessary “pep,” but it was his two quick goals that had the biggest bearing on the match. These gave the County confidence and led to their comfortable victory. In goal, Mackay made two bad slips, otherwise he was sound. Both backs were steady against a speedy forward line; Macrae completely held the famous Gowl, and although the centre notched two goals, they were the result of “gifts” from the gods rather than slackening off on the part of Macrae’s watchfulness. W. Mackenzie, at outside left, was delightfully refreshing in his speedy bursts up the wing or into the centre; he gave Aird ample support. Ross was the more successful of the inside men, but A. Mackay, at outside right, does not get the same dash into his game as was his wont.
Cowie, an old County favourite, playing at right half for Thistle, was outstanding, as was Ballantyne at centre half, and Macbean and Urquhart in the forwards.
