Ross County 2 King's Own Scottish Borderers 1

This fixture had a distinct end-of-the season tone, with the result that the play throughout was listless and drab. In fact, the only touches of merit emanated, generally, from the soldiers, who were unfortunate to lose both points.
In the first half the K.0.S.B.’s were seen to advantage, and had it not been for Sherlaw’s brilliancy in the home goal, the County would have been in dire straits, and faced with heavy arrears. However, the Ross men were the first to score, through Mackenzie. The point was secured, following a corner, when Lewin saved Mackay's shot, but the schoolboy centre caught the rebound and netted. A reply soon came from the visitors, for they equalised after a melee in the home goal.
The change-over did not witness any great improvement in the standard of play, until the last ten minutes, when the homesters became more methodical in their movements. But previously, the Ross side had already secured the winning goal, which also came from a corner. Lewin punted out, but Mackenzie returned it and although the soldiers’ keeper partially saved the shot, he was bundled into the net along with the ball.
It is quite apparent that the County have lost a great deal of the dash and cohesion that has marked many of their displays. Apart from Mackay, Ross and A. J. Mackenzie, the forwards were weak and lacked initiative. Perhaps this was largely due to the poor support afforded by their intermediate line. Rarely have the home trio shown such disjointed tactics, and only the newcomer, Finlayson, partly succeeded in hitting an understanding with his attack. It was not a good occasion on which to judge the ability of D. Mackenzie, the new back from Brora. When playing at right back in the second half, he gave promise of development, and he will be an asset to the County. Again Sherlaw showed that he is in his best form.
