| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Elgin City 2, Ross County 1 Ross County fell to Elgin on Saturday, a goal scored in the closing minutes giving Elgin the victory by two goals to one. Urquhart was early in action, saving from Macdonald and Lindsay in the opening minutes. Making all the running, the Elgin forwards gave the County defence a hot time of it, but they held up well to their gruelling. The County, when on the move, were smart, and clever play by Mackenzie let Black away, but the winger's shot was deflected for a corner. In another County breakaway, Parle was brought into action and cleverly cleared a header from Mackenzie. Elgin took the lead when Mackenzie (outside left) centred for Lindsay to beat Brett from close range. Urquhart was very prominent at centre-half for County, and through him, Cowie got away and snapped up a clever goal off a Black cross. County’s play improved; the goal stimulated them, and just when it looked as if they had mastered Elgin, Urquhart was hurt and played for the remainder of the game at outside left, F. Macleod taking the centre-half position. A half-time score of one-all was a fair result. Elgin twice made strong appeals for a penalty, while Brett was bombarded with all manners of shots. If occasionally County had luck with them, so also had Elgin. Macpherson shot wildly over the bar with Parle out of his goal, while another shot from Cowie was diverted by Hendry. With but ten minutes of time left, Elgin went ahead, Mackenzie beating Brett with a great ground shot. |
