| Match Report | Report from the Northern Scot. Elgin City 7 Ross County 0 Elgin City scored their most convincing victory of the season when they defeated Ross County by seven goals to nil in a Highland League fixture at Borough Briggs on Saturday. The victors of last month's Qualifying Cup tie were completely outplayed on the occasion, and the Elgin attack, led by MacLennan, played some of the nicest football seen on the pitch for some time. The visitors, however, were considerably under strength, three newcomers being included in the team. These were Grant, the left back, a Tor United player; R. M'Leod, an Invergordon junior, and Ross, a Fearn junior, who made up the left wing. Ross County started with a raid, but Elgin quickly cleared their lines, and Glass had hard luck. From a Gordon cross, which Scott palmed out, Mackenzie shot just past. At the other end R. M'Leod hit against an Elgin defender in the goalmouth. End-to-end play continued for a spell, and MacLennan missed a great chance when Glass got through and gave him the ball in the goalmouth, where he miskicked. Both Gordon and Mackenzie also failed to put the ball into the net, and Ramage cleared. Elgin again came near to opening their account when Gordon got away and sent over a perfect cross, which MacLennan collected. The pressure was now almost constantly on the opposite, and a close-range shot by Glass was turned over for a corner. Mackenzie twice tested Scott, but the Dingwall custodian was in good form. He had, on one occasion, to run out to the edge of the goalmouth to block a cross. Again the ball lay for an instant beside Scott in the goalmouth, and before MacLennan could recover from a tackle the leather had been cleared. The home pressure was too strong to go unrewarded, however, and ten minutes before the interval Mackenzie opened their account with a well-placed shot just under the bar. The homesters were further ahead just on half-time, when, in passing to his custodian, Grant put into his own goal. Although this was a lucky point, Elgin were not flattered by the interval margin. The second period was practically all Elgin, the visitors having not more than half-a-dozen raids. The forwards played a great combination game, Gordon and Dallas on the right wing forming a fine partnership, Dallas's accurate slipping to both his wing and centre were a feature. MacLennan was a very alive centre and Glass a dangerous winger, both ably supported by Ross and Mackenzie. Neish played a very strong game at right-half. In the opening minutes Dallas struck the post from close range, and MacLennan had a great drive, which Scott touched over. Ross had a raid in which they forced a corner when Parke cut out fast, and following the kick MacLachlan cleared from the goalmouth. Elgin renewed the attack, and MacLennan scored a fine goal with his head off a Gordon cross. The Ross centre shot over, and Neish had a drive which Scott punched into the air and cleared from below the bar. A clever movement resulted in MacLennan presenting Mackenzie with a gift goal to put Elgin four up. Two minutes later MacLennan tricked the Ross backs and placed accurately in the far corner, and immediately on the restart Mackenzie shot a sixth from the penalty line to complete his "hat-trick." Urquhart sent in a fine shot from a free kick, but Parke cleared. Ross woke up and for a spell tested Parke, but their revival was short-lived. Shortly before full time MacLennan brought the home total to seven, taking a pass from close range, thus completing his own hat-trick. |
