| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Inverness Citadel 5 Ross County 0 Disappointment dogged Ross County’s steps up to and through the first round of the North of Scotland Cup. Arrangements had been made to bring forward a formidable eleven, and two well-known K.O.S.B. men had been booked up. At the last minute, it was found that these men could not turn out, while Charlie Cameron was also prevented from coming. Aird’s injury was still troublesome and consequently he was out of the count. Paul Grant was fielded but was not in good condition, an old injury asserting itself while the game was still young. It was thought that Cumming (Invergordon) of Edinburgh City and a reserve Amateur Internationalist might be secured, but this arrangement was also knocked on the head. At the last minute, two Gordon Highlanders were secured, one for right back, the other as centre forward. The former proved an exceptionally fine player, but the centre-forward was not up to Highland League standard. Stewart (Alness) took up the outside left berth and acquitted himself with much distinction, being both plucky and adventurous, while he got the ball over in a way that surprised the County supporters. The County committee are to be sympathised with in their dilemma and congratulated in the way they met it. Notwithstanding all this mix-up, there was a good crowd of Ross-shire supporters at Shore Street Park when the teams lined up. But the bad luck of County still dogged them. Within a minute, a long shot from Maclean, Citadel’s clever centre-half, had Scott beaten. The ball came in from at least forty yards out; Scott rose to it, but let it past him, the ball hitting the cross-bar, then rebounding off the goalkeeper’s back into the net. In two and a half minutes, County were two goals down, Scott being beaten with a fast ground shot from A. Mackenzie. That did it! Citadel now had all the confidence they needed and their well-known cup-tie spirit asserted itself, with the result that they played splendid football, taking risks and, as usually happens in the case of a winning side, the risks came off and turned out profitably. The County defence stood up to a grueling attack, well led by Urquhart and Rammage. Urquhart, at one period, headed out from the goal-line with Scott hopelessly beaten, while Rammage forced on his forwards but to little account. County did get a shot in at the Citadel goalkeeper but he was very safe, and also had more than his fair share of luck. County resumed confidently enough, but Citadel went further ahead, W. Mackenzie scoring with a splendid left-foot drive. Before the finish, Citadel secured another two points through A. Mackenzie and Patterson, and the winning score of five goals to nil was not over-rated, although County were worthy of at least one point. |
