| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Inverness Thistle 2 Ross County 4 On Saturday, Ross County played their last Highland League fixture of the season at Inverness against Thistle and beat them by four goals to two. County’s task was made easy by the fact that Thistle had to play an Inverness Cup tie immediately afterwards, and they consequently fielded a side composed mostly of juniors. Thistle scored first, but the experience, method, and fitness of the County ultimately told, and they equalised through Macleod, with Trail (2) and Mackay bringing the total up to four, and Gowl getting his side’s second goal. This goal gives Gowl the Highland League goal-scoring record for one season’s play, Willie Whitton, of Caledonian and later of Tottenham Hotspur, having held the record for many years with forty-two goals. Gowl's total after this game was forty-three. Later in the evening he added to it, and still has a chance of reaching the half-century—truly a creditable performance and one which is likely to stand for many years to come. |
