Ross County 2 Forres Mechanics 3

By allowing Forres Mechanics to take two points away from Dingwall on Saturday, Ross County lost a glorious opportunity to establish themselves firmly at the top of the league table, and if not heading it, at least putting themselves in a very favourable position. The County started off with a swing and before many minutes had elapsed, Grant, whose return was more than welcome, put his side ahead with a fine effort. County maintained the upper hand and but for the water-logged state of the pitch, Aird would have at least added another two goals before half an hour had elapsed. As it was, when clear of the backs on both occasions, the ball stuck in the mud and he overran it. It was too great a let-off for Forres, and the County committee should take notice of the lesson. Gradually the visitors began to assert themselves, and an over-confidence in the home team made things easier for the smart Forres forwards. The inevitable happened when Mackintosh, who had changed to outside left owing to injuries, sent in a fast ground pass from the wing. The ball was too fast for Brett to get at, and Ross had only to touch it to send it hard into the net. Both sets of forwards had turn and turn about on the attack, the County five being the bigger sinners in missing: they were too prone to pass out when a shot for goal was indicated.
The County started off in the second period with as much confidence as they evinced in the first half. They were always around about Mackenzie and his backs, but could make little or no impression. From one of numerous breakthroughs, Forres took the lead. The inside right, Dickie, crossed a lovely ball which Mackintosh headed through with Brett hopelessly placed to prevent him. Back the homesters came, and Mackenzie saved a fine try by Grant: it was a shot which nine times out of ten would have counted. The County’s fighting spirit at this period was very much in evidence but their finishing was extremely poor. Forres half-backs gave them little time to consider and Morrison was losing numerous likely chances. When Macdonald shot from twenty yards out, it looked as if Forres would go still further ahead, but Brett brought off a remarkable clearance. Hart was hurt in a tackle but resumed. Sutherland, from Golspie, was of little use: Garrow, at half-back, was below form, while Urquhart was full of fancy if unprofitable tricks. Ross, in Forres' centre forward berth, had a third goal from a surprise run up. The visitors were now top dogs and were playing a better combined movement. Aird, however, got the chance of a lifetime but sent over from close in. County were now fighting for all they were worth and cut out a deal of the unprofitable stuff earlier indulged in. It was a case of the Forres defence v. the County forward line, and the Forres defence prevailed until Hart converted a penalty given away by Bennett. Encouraged, the whole of the outfield players of the County went on the attack but Mackenzie, in Forres' goal, was very sure, and the game ended with Forres dourly holding on to their one goal lead.
