Ross County 2 Caledonian FC 0

Ross County won their first match against Caledonian at Dingwall on Wednesday night by two goals to nil, in the semi-final of the Inverness Cup. This competition is based on the home-and-home principle, the goal average over the two games deciding the winners. County ousted Nairn in the first round, while Caledonian accounted for Citadel. The game was very interesting and some fine football occasionally cropped up, especially in the first half, with the County holding a decided advantage, and they were worth a bigger lead than the one goal scored by Mackay gave them at half time. Mackay's goal was a magnificent one, he shooting strongly into the net a ball which had come up field from a fine piece of play by Trail and brilliantly carried on by Davidson (Ardgay).
The second half was not so good and County suffered much from lack of a forward with finishing powers. Grant (Ardgay) who took Aird’s place, had not the experience necessary to evade the wily Mitchell, while he got very little of the ball in this half, and what he got were anything but the right kind of passes. The County got the only other goal scored. Again this was the outcome of fine work by Davidson, and Mackay’s powerful shooting. The winger carried the ball from his own half of the field, beating man after man to centre splendidly. Mackay got at it and shot, but the ball was returned, Cameron bringing it under control and presenting Mackay with another chance. He made no mistake this time. County should have made sure of a larger lead than two goals, and they had the chance to do so. They will need all their two goals at Inverness next Thursday when the second tie is played.
A feature of the game was the sparkling display of Davidson, the Ardgay man at outside right. He is both clever and fast, while his cleverness does not lead him into the mistake of losing ground by over-elaboration. Ross County spectators were left wondering why a clever player like this who has been featuring in the Ardgay team all season, was not picked up long ago by the County Committee.
