| Match Report | Report from the Huntly Express. Huntly 3 Ross County 1 Although Huntly defeated Ross County by 3 goals to 1 at Christie Park on Saturday, they did not by any means give a very convincing display. If they mean to retain their position at the top of the League they will have to show a little more steadiness when in the vicinity of their opponents’ goal. Several opportunities were also lost on Saturday by the home forwards trying to walk the ball through when a shot from further out would have brought better results. The play was not too well distributed on Saturday, the ball being nearly always on the right wing. Had Ewen got a little more of the ball during the first half, when he had the wind behind him, the home team would perhaps have held a better lead at half time. The game was marred by a rather serious accident near the finish, when Munro and M‘Ritchie received head wounds through their heads coming together in attempting to head the ball. Both were carried off and had to receive doctor’s attention. Both sides finished the game with ten men. Playing with the wind behind them, Huntly immediately forced a corner which was cleared by the County. Following this the visitors settled down to a very good game, and for a time led the Huntly defence a merry dance. Huntly could not get going and against a defence which went in for first-time tackling and kicking they made little headway. The County were a fast lot and the Huntly defence had an anxious time. Paul saved his side on one occasion when he brought off a brilliant double save by throwing himself at Trail’s feet. The goal was not long delayed, however. Clever play by M‘Ritchie and Trail carried the ball to the home goal, and after Paul had been drawn out of his goal Morrison, who was lying without a home player within yards of him, found no difficulty in sending the ball into an empty goal. This happened after about a quarter of an hour’s play, and the lead was well deserved. A goal down Huntly settled to a better game, and during the remainder of this half Paul was a spectator. Shots rained in on Campbell and for a time his charge had a charmed life. It was not long before the equaliser came along, Sey being the marksman. Donald and Sutherland both had great shots stopped by the woodwork, and then Campbell brought off a great, if somewhat lucky save from a header by Young. The County goal was bombarded from all angles, but so well did they pack their goal that Huntly could not get the ball through. Donald shot over and then Sey had a rocket shot cleared by Campbell. Edwards also came near the mark with a long shot. A breakaway by the County proved their own undoing. A clearance by Edwards was fastened on to by Ewen, who crossed perfectly to Young. The latter, who found the defence spreadeagled, easily shot the ball past the advancing goalkeeper. Play continued all in Huntly's favour, but they could get nothing to show for it. Half-time arrived with Huntly still attacking. Huntly resumed where they had left off, and once more the County defence was subjected to a bombardment. Nicol tested Campbell early on, and next minute the goalkeeper had to punch away an awkward ball from Sey. Nicol forced a corner on the right, but he placed the ball behind from the flag. Next minute he made amends, however, when from another flag-kick he placed the ball so perfectly that Young had simply to nod it into the net. From the centre Ross County almost reduced the leeway. A shot from M‘Ritchie appeared to be travelling to the back of the net, when Edwards threw himself full length and stopped it at the foot of the post. It was a save worthy of any goalkeeper. Huntly soon returned to the attack and after a lob forward from Edwards, Sey headed the ball into the net. The referee, however, chalked off the goal for offside. Donald beat Campbell with a good shot, but the ball hit the cross-bar and was cleared. Sey next shot inches too high off a nice up the middle pass from Young, and again the centre gave Campbell a stinger to hold. Ewen might have scored when he was presented with an easy chance, but instead he tried to get closer in and found his way blocked and the chance was lost. The County again had Paul in action, and for a short time the ball was round the home goal. It was at this point that Munro and M‘Ritchie were carried off. Ewen went to left back, but he did not get much opportunity to show his prowess as a defender. Huntly held the upper hand until the end which came with Ross County beaten but far from being disgraced. |
