Caledonian FC 1 Ross County 1
Caley are set to boost their attack by signing former Peterhead striker Paul Mackenzie from Burnley.
Player-manager Sergei Baltacha has spoken to the English Second Division club and Aberdonian Mackenzie is understood to be willing to return north and be a prime candidate for Caley's successor, Caledonian Thistle, in the Scottish League next season.
Manager Baltacha said: "We have been making inquiries about front players and we have had Mackenzie watched. Burnley are agreeable to a deal and we hope things can be concluded."
Mackenzie, who was with Sunderland as a teenager before breaking his leg, moved from Peterhead two years ago for a £20,000 fee.
Now Baltacha sees him strengthening Caley's Press and Journal Highland League championship challenge.
The Inverness club's need for extra firepower was underlined in an entertaining McEwan's Lager North Cup tie as Charlie Christie time and again lacked support.
Meanwhile, Ross County head for tomorrow's Scottish Cup shoot-out at Alloa in great heart after a fine performance which pleased manager Bobby Wilson.
Wilson's tactical move was to switch full backs Chris Somerville and Craig Reid to cope with the pace of Wilson Robertson, who had destroyed County twice already this season.
Young Reid, composed and constructive, won the man of the match award, helped by the fact that Robertson appeared to have pressed the snooze button.
"We're all fit and well, which is the main thing," said Wilson. "We go to Alloa with no worries and nine bus loads of fans are already booked to cheer us on."
Honours were even in a tie which never matched last autumn's classic in the league at Telford Street, but was still a good advert for the league, which both sides will soon leave.
County were the more fluent outfit, Caley strong and determined, and there was nothing between them until the last 20 minutes when the Dingwall lads took control.
Gordon Connelly is beginning to assert himself again and show his genuine quality, while Andy MacLeod's passing was a treat.
Mike Noble was immense for Caley, while Christie, who hit the post and forced Steve Hutchinson to pull off a superb late save, produced delicious skills.
Mike Andrew did a good job of shadowing ever-alert Brian Grant, who nevertheless came desperately close to grabbing the winner.
The Goals were beauties. Martin LISLE powered home a 15th-minute header and, in the opening minute of the second half, Barry WILSON levelled with a wonderful solo effort.
