Ross County 0 Huntly 1
Kevin Walker, the wee warrior who has captained Huntly to their first Press and Journal Highland League championship in 64 years, has taken the shock decision to quit senior soccer.
The 32-year-old sweeper, who helped Peterhead win the title five years ago, will make his farewell appearance against Caley at Christie Park on Saturday when Huntly collect the championship trophy.
But Kevin is not hanging up his boots. He is poised to join Banks o' Dee as player-coach, Being reunited with his brother, Colin, who left Huntly last Summer.
Kevin has been an inspiration at the back in Huntly's emergence to the top flight and is nicknamed "rottweiler" because of his constant snarling at teammates in expressing his tremendous drive and determination.
Manager Steve Paterson, who signed Walker, said: "Kev wants to bow out at the top and we respect his decision. He has done a simply marvellous job for us and we are extremely grateful. He is a hard act to follow and it is nice that the fans will be able to show their appreciation when he makes a cameo appearance on Saturday. The rottweiler will snarl for the last time."
The Aberdonian has been a livewire throughout his Highland League career, winning the respect of his fellow professionals, and his departure is the end of an era.
The champions could also have a double gap in the heart of their defence if they lose ex-Don Doug Rougvie, who is being interviewed for the vacant Cove Rangers' managership.
The big fellow, now a cult figure with the fans, was simply immense in both defence and attack in the win at Victoria Park which keeps the Strathbogie side on course to equal the championship points record of 87 points, set up by Inverness Thistle in 1988, if they win at Rothes on Wednesday and then against Caley on Saturday.
Eddie Copeland was taken to hospital with a dislocated elbow and is set to miss the final matches, a pity in view of his long and valuable contribution to Huntly's cause.
County's last game at Dingwall as a Highland League club was an entertaining affair and, while the home side played some neat stuff and had their chances, the hero was their stand-in goalkeeper Ross Cathcart.
The Alness lad was superb, with a series of point-blank stops as Huntly frequently reduced to rubble a defence recast after Johnston Bellshaw was taken to hospital. The big centre half has torn ankle ligaments and has kicked his last ball of the season.
There may now be a huge question mark over the future of County's regular keeper Steve Hutchison. The ex-Falkirk man, who played in two title winning County sides, is clearly out of favour. He has been retained but Cathcart's form suggests that Steve, who is training with Hamilton, could be on the move.
Yet, Huntly really should have put the game beyond County's reach, failing to cash in on a series of overlaps made by Alan Dunsire and Martin Stewart.
The only goal came from Craig YEATS, in easily his best display since joining Huntly from Montrose. He played up front rather than midfield.
