| Comments | Match Report Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Ross County 2 Peterhead 1 On Saturday, the opening day of Season 1992-93, Mr Donnie Macbean, Dingwall, vice-chairman of Ross County Football Club, unfurled the 1991-92 Highland League Championship Flag at Victoria Park, as vice-president of the Highland League. It was a duty he performed with much pride, for there are no stronger supporters of the Club than Donnie and his family. County are faced with a formidable programme in their opening set of matches in defence of their crown, and there was no greater test than Peterhead. In the final game of last season, Peterhead had come within an ace of victory at Victoria park, and County had been glad to share the points. On this occasion, however--a bit rusty perhaps, and not feeling the full benefits of pre-season training, lacking match practice, although quite a number of friendly games had been played--County suffered no allusions that Peterhead would stand on ceremony for they have similar ambitions on the Championship honours. Over the past five seasons, under Bobby Wilson's management, Ross County have not gained a victory over Peterhead, the record having stood at two defeats and three draws. Would the trend be reversed? For a time--a whole hour or so--Peterhead looked the more likely to win the day as they were sharper and more sprightly, and were getting the better of exchanges. However, despite territorial advantage, the visitors were denied opportunities by a stuffy defence, behind which Hutchison was as safe as houses. Then, in the 36th minute, Bruce Campbell of Peterhead broke clear in midfield, and his accurate cross was volleyed past Hutcheson from ten yards by Roddie CHEYNE. In the 32nd minute, Ross County lost the services of the former East Stirling and St Mirren midfielder, Gardner Spiers, who is on a month-to-mouth contract with the club. He was taken off with blood streaming from a gash on his nose after being accidentally kicked. Fortunately there is no break. In the second period, County fought back determinedly, and were rewarded in the 65th minute, when Jamie Macpherson caught the defence flatfooted for once, and from well out on the right chipped the ball across goal. Andy MACLEOD was perfectly placed to meet the cross, but his mis-kicked effort deceived keeper Dunbar, the ball bouncing over him and into the net. County's tails were up and their attacks became more determined, so much so that in the 77th minute they scored what proved to be the winning goal. The groundwork had been made by Macpherson and Alan Duff, who combined to carve an opening before Duff chipped the ball to the far post to an unmarked Gordon CONNELLY, and he bulleted it home. |
