The rebuilding of Clach, snatched from the jaws of bankruptcy only two years ago, took a massive stride forward on Saturday when the Inverness side defeated Highland League champions Ross County 1-0 at Grant Street Park.
The victory was a tactical triumph for the management team of Roshie Fraser and Peter Corbett, who rearranged their side to snuff out the twin menace of County's wing wizard Billy Ferries and midfield playmaker Gordon Connelly.
"We reckoned that if we could keep those two quiet it would cut off the supply to their strikers and it worked," said co-boss Fraser.
"I think they had only two chances in the entire game. Robbie Farquhar did a superb marking job on Connelly and Ferries was kept under control by Jed Douglas."
Although the game was never classic it wasn't helped by a string of controversial decisions by referee Paul Watson that had both sets of supporters seething.
While one couldn't quarrel with the six yellow cards that he issued--four for Clach and two for County--they could have been limited by more decisive action in the early stages.
His performance, however, did not affect the outcome as Clach thoroughly deserved to take the points in front of a 900-strong crowd.
Scoring chances were few and far between until Clach snatched the decisive goal five minutes before the break when HARDIE, unmarked, soared above the County defence to head powerfully home.
County were well on top in the early stages of the second half and Alan Duff had a free header which he sent wide from a good position and Brian Grant fluffed his shot from 10 yards.
Clach were rarely seen as an attacking force for the remainder of the game but they defended brilliantly as County dominated without ever looking likely to find the net.
Arris did, however, produce a superb diving save from Grant's header with five minutes remaining.
County manager Bobby Wilson said: "I didn't think that we deserved to lose but we never put their keeper under any real pressure. If we had shown the same commitment in the first half as we did after the interval it would have been an entirely different story."
A crumb of comfort for the County supporters was the return of centre half Scott Lemmon, his first game since breaking a leg a year ago. He played well for 70 minutes before being replaced by Jamie MacPherson.
