Inverness Thistle 1 Ross County 4 Inverness Thistle sweeper Billy Wilson called off yesterday morning as he was among a group of firemen flown to Shetland to tackle the Russian factory ship blaze--but his teammates found themselves doing some intensive fire-fighting of their own. Ross County, Tennents Highland League Cup winners two years ago, blazed to an impressive win, extinguishing Jags hopes with some superb leading up play. Thistle's defence was time and again reduced to smoking rubble, their midfield leaving them badly exposed as County's clever foraging found the gap. The elegance of Tommy Drummond and the busy flair of Gordon Connolly and Andy MacLeod put the home side under repeated pressure. Watching Caley manager Sergei Baltacha was given food for thought as his men now visit Dingwall in the next round on Wednesday. County clicked into top gear right from the start, missing three glorious chances in the opening stages before Wilson's through ball in 10 minutes eluded young Steve MacDonald and Brian GRANT cleverly lobbed it over the keeper from the edge of the box. The one-way traffic continued and in 34 minutes Andy MacLeod again caught the Jags square and Barry WILSON neatly lobbed Calder. The visitors were still in vintage form after the interval and missed a chance to go further ahead when Wilson went down in a clash with Bell and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Connolly, however, fired the spot kick wide. CONNOLLY redeemed himself in 67 minutes with a picture header from 15 yards from Wilson's perfect cross. Home hopes were raised in 72 minutes when confusion in the Ross defence saw WATT slam home off the far post. But Jags could not stage a revival and their bad night was completed two minutes from time when GRANT netted his second, forcing the ball over the line in a clash with Calder as the home defence claimed the keeper had been impeded. Three players were booked--Thistle's Steve Bremner and County's Barry Wilson and Gordon Connolly. |
