| Comments | Match Report Report by Mike Tremlett for the Press & Journal. Lossiemouth 1 Ross County 0 Lossiemouth picked themselves up after Saturday's North Cup semi-final defeat by Caley to make a dent in Ross County's Press and Journal Highland League championship chances at Grant Park last night. A 26th-minute goal from Drew Ross was scant reward for Lossie's domination of the first 45 minutes when they could have kicked the game well out of County's reach. The second half saw County battle back and on three or four occasions come within an inch of getting back into the game. Lossie boss Fraser Kellas restricted himself to just one change from the side which had performed so well for no reward at Telford Street, bringing back livewire striker Iain Stewart with the injured Steve Kew left out. County counterpart Bobby Wilson, with Chris Somerville and Andy MacLeod both suspended, recalled Tom Drummond for his first start since the end of October and handed a debut to second team defender David MacKay. Early in the first half there was little sign of the way Lossie would dominate the first 45 minutes, Connelly blazing over the bar from 20 yards after clever approach play from the Dingwall midfield. Iain Stewart cleverly made room for a shot but his finish flew just off target and two minutes later at the other end Williamson should have done better with a free header, getting no power behind the ball which was held easily by Lossie keeper Ivor Pirie. Midway through the first half, Lossie got a grip on the proceedings, Drew Ross, who was a thorn in County's flesh all night, latching on to a loose ball to beat the oncoming Hutchison with a chip which did not carry enough pace to get past the covering Bellshaw. Ian Shaw fired over the bar from 12 yards when he arrived just in front of a perfectly delivered low cross from Ross which made a clean strike difficult, but two minutes later ROSS drifted in from the right flank on to a ball from Paterson to chip an angled shot past Hutchison from 19 yards. In a rare County attack, Wilson shot low from the edge of the box but Pirie was well positioned to turn the ball away from danger. The first half ended with Lossie well on top and unlucky not to be further ahead after a Gerrard shot was cleared on the line and an Iain Stewart overhead kick was cleared by Bellshaw with keeper Hutchison beaten. In the second half County rolled up their sleeves and made more of a game of it in midfield to produce a couple of chances early on which could have turned the game around. A Barry Wilson shot was beaten away by Pirie in 56 minutes after he narrowed the angle brilliantly, Grant follow up was cleared off the goal line and then Alan Duff's shot was somehow worked clear. On the hour, a Drew Ross run again caused County problems but Shaw, who pounced on the loose ball after Ross ran into trouble, screwed his shot just off target from the corner of the six yard box. Alan Duff almost punished slack defending in 70 minutes when he clipped just wide of the near post. Late in the game County boss Wilson brought on Billy Ferries for Tom Drummond and striker Gary Ross for the out of touch Brian Grant but in the end time ran out. |
