| Comments | Match Report Report from the North Star. Ross County 4 Caledonian FC 3 A classy display of one-touch football which had great rivals Caley baffled and bewildered gave Ross County a 4-3 victory in the last meeting of the clubs under the Highland League banner. And making the result all the more pleasant to savour was the fact that County had fought back after losing two goals in the first 20 minutes to take the points. In fact County had so much of the early play one could hardly credit that they had fallen two behind after making all the running, but their along the ground soccer richly deserved the end result of a win over Caley at last this season. It looked as if Caley were to head for the senior new Scottish Third Division with yet another County scalp hanging from their belt after Martin Lisle in 20 minutes had added to Alan Smart's earlier 11th minute counter. On both occasions the Ross rear guard had got into a terrible mess with Robertson's miss-hit landing at the feet of the unmarked SMART for the opener and then keeper Hutchison being suspect at LISLE's free header for the second. But all credit to County for battling on and continuing to take the game to Caley in all out attacks. After a long period of sustained Ross pressure County pulled one back when DUFF shot high into the roof of the net after Brennan had cleared off the goal line in 29 minutes. Then, two minutes later it was all square with Barry WILSON hammering the ball past a helpless MacRitchie from out on the right. Then the Blues goal had a series of amazing escapes and County hit them all their fire power to bring a series of super saves from MacRitchie who punched away shots from both Connelly and Andy MacLeod. County were in full cry now and MacRitchie was Caley's saviour again, punching a Grant header onto the bar. But another County counter was only delayed and right on the stroke of half-time Brian GRANT, the north's leading scorer, got his due to complete an amazing, first half revival from County. Caley big central defender, Mike Andrew, who had been booked for a foul on Grant limped off at the interval and failed to reappear for the second period, being replaced by Sinclair. And Caley seemed to get their second wind and within 11 minutes Wilson ROBERTSON had put them right back into it with an equaliser which looked a keeper's ball but flew into his top left hand corner. Now the fat was really in the fire with County taking complete command again and their fans going delirious with joy when in stepped that ace scorer Brian GRANT again to give his side the lead for a second time. This cracker came after 76th minutes with Ferries and Ross having replaced Duff and Wilson earlier. While County didn't really have a failure five star shows came from Bellshaw, Somerville, Williamson and Grant with the deft flicks of Andy MacLeod causing the Blues all sorts of trouble. After failing to get the better of Caley in four meetings already this season it was fitting County should win the final confrontation before the teams enter the "big time"--and they richly deserved the point with that fantastic fight back. |
