| Comments | Match Report Report by Bill McAllister for the Press & Journal. Ross County 1 Fort William 2 Holders Ross County lost their grip on the Tennents Highland League Cup last night when a double by Alan Murdoch gave the Lochaber men a sensational victory. Fort survived a hectic last 15 minutes with only 10 men after John Flannigan was sent off, but there was no way County could break down a defence expertly marshalled by player-boss Danny Conlon. Young keeper Archie MacPherson was ice cool under pressure as the champions eventually ran out of ideas, despite massive territorial superiority. It was rich revenge for Fort, who lost 11-0 on their pervious visit to Dingwall. County took the lead in 18 minutes when Brian GRANT celebrated his return by firing in Connelly's cross. MacPherson had a superb save from Grant, but the visitors were increasingly resilient and when Neil MacBeath came on for the injured Peter MacPhee, the substitute's far post cross was headed home by MURDOCH. Fort grew more confident in slick counter-punching and Murdoch blazed over a gaping goal early in the second half--but there was no mistake in 62 minutes when Flannigan's lob found MURDOCH in acres of space and he thumped it past the advancing keeper. County piled on the pressure but it was tinged with desperation. However, the Lochaber men suffered a blow in 75 minutes when Flannigan, booked minutes earlier, body-checked Williamson and was ordered off. Fort also had MacLeod booked as the homesters rained in shots and crosses, with Davidson making a goal-line clearance from Williamson's fierce low 20-yarder. But the gallant rear-guard action triumphed--and the first of County's three trophies must leave Victoria Park. |
