Ross County 5 Rothes 2
Ross County were resplendent in their new kit on Saturday, when they entertained Rothes in the Highland League, and not a few eyebrows were raised on viewing the baggy shorts--and we thought these were a thing of the past. There must be some good reason for designers coming forward with such antediluvian attire; perhaps they protect the hamstrings, comfort and warmth on a cold, wet winter's day, perhaps becoming heavier and bulkier in the falling rain, hampering freer movement. However, one thing they are not and that is a thing of beauty and a joy forever. Anyway one does not suppose there is anything a mere supporter can do about it, but if a player finds his sensitivity, his mobility and speed impaired by these frills, surely he can complain!
The County defence has been struggling off late and frailties have been shown up. The need for a steadying influence is first priority, and in this respect one hopefully looks to the return of Scott Lemmon to add some stability to the defence. Scott has been playing himself back to full fitness with the reserve team and already he has had three 90-minute games under his belt in the North Caledonian League with County registering wins on all three occasions.
The Rothes game saw the return to form of the Brian Grant--Alan Duff duo, who shared the County's five goals.
Alan DUFF opened the scoring in the fifth minute, when he headed home a Ferries cross from the right. A minute later, however, SMITH scrambled home the equaliser after the County defence had failed to clear.
On the quarter hour, DUFF shot County in front once more after he latched on to a flick from Brian Grant, and in the 37th minute they went further ahead, GRANT turning the ball home from a Macleod pass.
As the first half closed, both sets of defences looked shaky under pressure, but neither set of forwards could take advantage of situations arising.
Two minutes into the second half, GRANT scored his second goal, when he slotted the ball home from close in.
Rothes pulled one back in the 49th minute, when BAVIDGE cut in from the left and crashed a 20-yard shot past Hutcheson at his near post.
A penalty kick by Gordon Connelly was well saved by the Rothes keeper, and then Brian GRANT completed his first hat-trick of the season with a perfect lob.
