Ross County 1 Dundee 1. County Win Extra Point 7-6 on Pens. Akil Wright and Brad Foster are the heroes in the shootout after County hold Premiership opponents then triumph in sudden death. Ross County held Premiership side Dundee 1-1 in the Premier Sports Cup – then won 7-6 in the penalty shoot-out to move top of their section. The Highlanders competed well in this tie, with Finlay Robertson’s powerful and pinpoint free-kick giving Dundee the interval advantage. Skipper Brian Graham headed County level early in the second half, which set up a fascinating finish to this third of four cup group games. It went all the way to a shoot-out and Akil Wright scored the decisive penalty after Brad Foster saved two in a 7-6 sudden death triumph to move top of Group D with a bonus point win. County manager Stuart Kettlewell praised the Dark Blues and said their players acknowledged the Highlanders were worthy winners. He said: “First and foremost you want to win the game. “We understand that Dundee were favourites tonight, and they are a really good side, so our performance was top drawer from our point of view. “We were a wee bit passive and apprehensive in the first 20 minutes, and we could have spent more time on the ball, but testament to Dundee who are a touch of class. “Every one of them walked off the pitch and said we deserved the win in 90 minutes, which isn’t easy for them to do. “We said it would be a gauge of where we are, and our fitness levels are top drawer and some of our football was fantastic. “I think we saw a team who have a decent handle of how we want to play football at this stage.” County are now on eight points, which is one clear of Dundee. With the three best runners-up joining the eight group winners in the second round, County are well placed to progress if they avoid defeat at Airdrieonians this Saturday. Kettlewell sees no reason to be anything other than confident ahead of the game against their League One rivals. He said: “It’s still a big task ahead of us going away to Airdrie. “It will be a different test, but we’ve got the advantage in that and we have to try and show the same mindset and purpose in our play as we did tonight. “If we do that, we will stand a chance against anybody.” Stuart Kettlewell’s Staggies are now in League One after being relegated from the Championship in May, the club’s second successive demotion. Steven Pressley’s Dundee finished seventh in the Premiership last season, which was his first year in the Dens Park hotseat. Kettlewell kept the same starting XI which had delivered the wins against League Two opponents Annan Athletic and Clyde. From Dundee’s 5-0 win at Annan a week ago, Pressley made three changes with Owen Bevan, Robertson and Ashley Hay in for Aaron Donnelly, Simon Murray and midfielder Callum Jones, who is ruled out with an ankle injury. Dundee had a spring in their step early on and goalkeeper Brad Foster had to be alert to touch wide a low angled drive from Robertson, who cut in from the right flank. County responded and Graham got his head on to the end of a cross from Richard Chin, but Owen Bevan did enough to divert it wide. On 20 minutes Dundee stormed ahead, although with a cracking strike. Dylan Smith conceded a free-kick fully 25 yards out and Robertson crashed an unstoppable shot high into the top left corner, giving Foster no chance. There were some calls for a home penalty when Charlie Reilly seemed to catch Jack Turner in the box, but referee Sean Murdoch deemed there to be no infringement. The Staggies were firmly in this contest and Graham headed over the top as half-time approached as he connected with a Turner delivery. County began positively at the start of the second half and Ross Docherty saw his low drive pushed away by goalkeeper Kieran O’Hara after Chin and Adam Emslie combined to set up the chance. However, it was all square on 55 minutes when, from Strapp’s delivery, Graham directed his header out of O’Hara’s reach. This was the striker’s fifth goal in three games. County were clearly believing there was a game to be won and were pressing their top level opponents hard. A Jamie Lindsay volley from a poor clearance only missed the top right corner by inches, with the ball seeming destined to hit the net before Dundee breathed a collective sigh. Then Emslie attacked the box and drove a low shot on target, which O’Hara turned around the post as County continued to ask most questions. Emslie was put through late on, but O’Hara got enough on his save to deny him. Dundee’s Ethan Hamilton and County’s Lindsay saw their penalties saved in the shootout and it went all the way to sudden death when Idris Odutayo’s penalty was saved by Foster and Akil Wright slammed home his spot-kick for a 7-6 win.
