Ross County 1 Airdrieonians 2
Ross County slipped to the bottom of the Championship table after losing 2-0 at home against Airdrieonians.
With only one point separating the teams going into the weekend, they both knew that whoever lost the match would end up at the foot of the table.
For a while in the first half it looked as though County clearly had the upper hand with the chances they were creating, but no breakthrough could be found until Airdrieonians scored twice early in the second half.
Substitute Jay Henderson pulled one back in the closing stages, but it was not enough to prevent the Staggies slipping down to 10th in the second tier.
Although both sides had spells where the had the better of possession, it was County who were creating the best chances in the first half.
Ryan Duncan blazed over from close-range early on, with Dean Cornelius and James Scott both forcing saves out of visiting goalkeeper Cade Melrose.
Jordan White also went close with a header in the 34th minute, being denied by Melrose after being picked out with a pinpoint cross by Duncan.
Airdrieonians started the second half well, with one Lewis McGrattan shot sending Trevor Carson flying to his right before the effort was blocked before it could get to him.
They kept the pressure up, and went ahead 10 minutes after the restart when a cross from the right found its way to Gavin Gallagher, who slotted past Carson and into the bottom corner.
The visitors continued to be a threat on the counter attack, showing they were capable of breaking away at pace, and got a second goal through those means in the 67th minute.
Euan Henderson was the man to finish this time, being sent clean through on goal after Chris Mochrie made a charge forward, making no mistake when faced with just Carson.
County got a goal back in the 83rd minute, with Jay Henderson finding the net – albeit not with the cleanest of strikes – to get the hosts back in the contest.
Jordan White then had a chance to level the scores in stoppage time, but his header went over the bar.
When the final whistle was blown, then, it was still 2-1 to Airdrieonians, meaning the Diamonds leapfrogged County in the table.
